"If we both stick to the story, they can't prove anything."
—
Oh, the trouble that you and Nero could get into sometimes if you two were left alone to your own devices. You two had known each other for years—you'd met him through Kyrie actually—and since then you were practically inseparable. What had started out as just an innocent sparring match, started to escalate when undesired company decided to rear its ugly head, quite literally.
There were still quite a few demons lingering around even after Vergil and Dante had gotten rid of the Qliphoth. You and Nero often took it upon yourselves to clean up the streets and try and make things a little bit safer. Although, your late night antics brought you further outside in pursuit of not a demon, but of your best friend as he retreated into the still mostly abandoned roads.
"Hey, you're just running away like a little bitch now!" You called after him, following him into the darkness.
"I am not!" He replied, his voice echoing in the night. Grinning to yourself, you gripped your sword tighter and sprinted forward, swinging the blade at Nero as you caught up to him. He parried it easily and countered with a slice of his own. The clang of metal struggling against metal rang out in the night. Suddenly, you heard a noise that made you pause, leaving you open to be toppled over by a sweeping kick to your legs. Falling onto your back in an almost cartoon like fashion, you groaned as the air was knocked from you.
"I'm up one now." You heard Nero say above you as his hand appeared before you. You chuckled breathlessly at him and took his hand, letting him help you up.
"You only got that because I swore I heard something." You said as you stood and rolled your shoulders.
"Excuses, excuses." The man tsk'd at you playfully.
"Ah, whatever." You waved your hand at him dismissively. "It was best two out of three anyway." You twirled your sword in your hand several times before taking a fighting stance once again. Just as you were about lunge at Nero, a loud screeching caught your attention and you turned just in time to see a demon quite literally throwing itself at you from the shadows of the surrounding buildings. Taking a quick step back, you narrowly dodged its outstretched claws.
"Told you I heard something!" You stuck your tongue out at Nero as he impaled the demon in the chest with the Red Queen.
"Yeah, yeah. I have a better idea now though," he started, pulling the blade from the demon as it fell to the ground with a whimper, "whoever kills the most demons gets a free lunch and dinner tomorrow, courtesy of the other." There was a mirthful glint in his eyes as you locked yours with his. You grinned at him, tightening your grip on your own weapon.
"Deal." You agreed, confident that you'd be able to beat him by a long shot. Before you could spring into action though, two bullets whizzed past your head, finding their mark in more demons that had been encroaching behind you.
"One, two. Better get on it, (Y/N)!" He smirked, giving you a shoulder pat as he casually walked past you towards a darkened alleyway. If you could've had a visible irritation mark beside your head, you're sure you would've as you rolled your eyes at him.
It was easy to find more of the ugly creatures, the gunshots that reverberated through the night from both you and Nero only served to bring more and more. You easily cut them down as they swiped at you recklessly.
"I'm up to ten!" You yelled out.
"Liar!" Was the answer you received.
"Nuh uh, you can come here and count the bodies." You heard no answer after that and cheered at your tiny victory, only to be met with a snarl from behind you. Whirling around, your sword met its flesh with a clean slice and you shook your head at the lizard-like creature, as it made itself your eleventh kill.
It seemed like your nighttime activities had ended too soon however, and you let out a soft "phew" while plopping down on the ground. You were absolutely drenched in demon blood and maybe some of your own as you discovered several cuts that were only just now starting to sting as your adrenaline was fading away. You heard the sound of footsteps approaching you from your side and you glanced up to see Nero, who didn't look much better than you did. His usually pristine white hair was utterly stained with blood.
"Hey, maybe you should consider dyeing your hair that color." You teased, earning a scoff in return.
"I think we're out of demons for now." He said between somewhat heavy breaths. You were getting tired too, but you wouldn't admit it.
"How disappointing." You replied with a laugh, pushing yourself up off the ground. "I need a shower." You then said as you actually took a good look at your clothes. Slinging your sword up on your shoulder, you both began the walk back to the Devil May Cry office. Normally, Nero would be returning to Nico and the van, but he decide to stay with you and Dante for awhile.
"So uh, what's our coverup for if we get asked what the hell happened?" You asked, whilst you both trudged along.
"We were patrolling and got ambushed?" Nero suggested with a shrug and you snorted in a rather unladylike way.
"Yeah right, like they'd believe that."
"Do you have any better ideas? If we both stick to the story they can't prove anything."
"Something tells me that they'll figure out we went on a murder spree of our own volition sooner than they believe we got ambushed, of all things."
"Eh, whatever." You two drew nearer to the building as you could just make out the neon sign flickering in the darkness. "But speaking of, how many did you kill?"
"Twenty two." You replied smugly. It wasn't a bad number for the short amount of time you had been out.
"Twenty three!" Nero proclaimed proudly.
"No way!" You shoved his shoulder firmly, only for him to retaliate in kind.
"It's true, you can go and count the bodies yourself." He gave you a shit-eating grin and you glared back.
"I refuse to believe that you got ONE more kill than me." You jabbed a finger in his face as you started to push open the doors of the office. You hadn't even realized that you'd already arrived.
"Well you better start believing it, cause it happened." Once again Nero shrugged and gave a laugh as he walked in. You continued to bicker with him until a cough interrupted you. You both looked away from each to see Dante watching you both with an amused expression.
"Have a good night out?" He then asked, cocking an eyebrow as he reclined in the chair at his desk.
"Uhh, yeah, about that," you started, "we both-" You were suddenly cut off again, but by another voice, one that seemed less entertained.
"You don't have to lie. It's obvious what happened by the way you're tracking blood everywhere." You glanced over to the side to see Dante's brother sitting on the couch, but his eyes remained on the book he had in his hand. You shifted somewhat nervously. You knew that Vergil was Nero's father and he wouldn't exactly do anything to you, but it still didn't help that he was incredibly intimidating when he wanted to be; which was nearly all the time. He was usually so quiet and you often forgot that he was sticking around now.
"Right, sorry." Your embarrassment was written all over your face in the form of a red flush. "I uh, I'm gonna go change and shower now. I guess I owe you lunch and dinner tomorrow, Nero." You hurriedly pushed past your best friend and jogged up the stairs towards your room. You heard the telltale thump of his footsteps following behind you. Just before getting out of earshot, you could've sworn that you heard a comment said in unison from downstairs.
"Ah, kids."
