Autumn

Autumn

trees aflame with orange

let loose a rain of leaves

that crunch to powder underfoot

naked and empty boughs

echo the longing of Demeter

as the days shift to grey

Author's Note: This poem was written in response to the prompt "Change" from @Annaw51.

Demeter is the goddess of the harvest, and when her daughter Persephone must join her husband Hades in the underworld, Demeter misses her so much that the world turns to fall and then winter.
