CHAPTER 5
OLD HABITS
When Yotto broke his meditation the sun had dropped behind the western mountains and the crickets were already bathing the area with their night time chirping. 'wow, how long have I been up here?' Yotto thought, and although this was the most peaceful place in the whole monastery, he gathered his sai's and headed back to the golden doors of the Dragon's Peak monastery, the place he had called his home whole life.f
Upon reaching the monastery Yotto seen the night guards were already in place. Ken and Ryan were leaning casually against the wall. Their bo staffs were present, but were leaned up against the wall a few feet away. They were both senior monks, which meant they were no longer students. Instead of training everyday, monks like Ken and Ryan did jobs at the monastery. Whether it be guard duty or running into near towns or on some occasions, escorting people to and from the monastery. Whatever the masters needed, and one of the best perks, Yotto thought, was a senior monk receives a tattoo, and is fully excepted into the clan. This marking is not only a symbol of pride for the monk, but to the monastery he represents.
Ryan had just gotten his tattoo earlier today and Yotto could tell his left shoulder was still tender. He kept shifting his weight around on the wall, trying to find a comfortable position. Yotto made no attempt to be silent and walked strait for the doors.
Ken was the first one to notice someone coming out of the brush. He sprung from the wall, snatching his staff as he went, but quickly relaxed seeing it was Yotto. Ryan didn't move until he seen Ken jump.
"Yotto, I didn't expect to see you out here, especially since students aren't supposed to be out of the monastery at night." Ken said in a laughing tone. "...and you are gonna get me killed one day...why were you not watching?"
"Sorry...I was distracted...it won't happen again." Ryan managed to stutter.
Yotto snickered and bowed, showing honor to the senior monks. "I was on the ledge and time just...got away from me." Yotto said shrugging his shoulders."I did a little workout and meditation and the next thing I know the sun is down."
"That doesn't seem to be a problem to me." Ken said, stepping aside.
"Really?" Yotto asked, a little suspicious about the monk being so understanding.
"Yeah, I see no reason to go ratting you out over something this small, just to keep you out of your fight tomorrow..." Ken said, leaning back against the wall "...but I have a feeling that, that toad JoNeek would. So when you enter, use some stealth."
"Okay...thank you." Yotto said with a little confusion in his voice. He had never talk to, or been around senior monks much. They were always out or patrolling or doing whatever they do. One thing Yotto did know was he never expected on to be nice to him.
"I have to ask..." Ken said, stopping Yotto in his tracks. "...how did you do it?" his voice full of curiosity.
"Um, do what? I don't know what you mean." Yotto said.
" The bricks today, how did you break them your first try?" Ken asked, looking the blond monk in the eye. "I have been working on that technique for four years now and only in the last month, have a I learned to channel my ki into the staff." Ken said, looking down at his weapon.
"I really don't know..." Yotto said after a long pause,"...I just focused as hard as I could and went for it...wait, how did you know I broke the stack? There were no senior monks in the northern courtyard." Shooting a suspicious look at both of them.
