Josh and Chris sat in an empty cafe waiting for their group of friends to arrive. Since Josh is friends with a lot of diverse people, he made the decision to allow worlds to collide. Nerds meet Brats, Brats meet Jocks, Jocks meet Vegan(Sam's her own classification). Because they all go to the same school, it won't be the first time they all see each other and interacted.
Josh took a sip from his coffee, as the previous conversation dissolves to silence. Chris starts to change the subject, "So, who did you invite to hang out tonight?"
"Well, there's obviously Hannah and Beth. Sam and I believe she's bringing a friend with her. Jessica Riley and Emily Davis. Mike Monroe...and Matt Taylor."
"Wow, that's a lot of people."
"It certainly is," Josh said with a laugh, "Since my family is sorta well-known, I come to find a lot of connections, and also knowing them from high school."
Chris began to think about the people Josh invited. Would all these people get along? They were all so...different. Supposing that it wasn't his business, Chris chose to let it go.
Soon, there was a chime from the cafe bell, indicating that there was a customer coming through the door. It was Sam and her friend.
Josh and Chris had never met this new girl before because Sam had befriended her earlier that year. The young lady walked in behind Sam with a friendly smile across her face. Her eyes were kind and she had an interesting sense of style.
"Sammy," Josh called, waving her over. Sam saw him and she and her friend walked towards their booth.
"Hey guys," Sam looked off over at her friend, holding her hand out for her introduction, "this is my new friend Ashley. Ashley, these are my friends Chris and Josh."
Josh held his hand out for a handshake, "Nice to meet you, Ashley," he then whispered directly to her, "You better watch out for Sam, she's a little loco."
Sam then jabbed Josh in the arm, "Hardy har." Ashley laughed and joined the joke, "Don't worry, I already know how crazy she can get." They all laughed as Sam and Ashley sat in the booth across from the boys.
Chris tipped his invisible hat towards Ashley, "It is a pleasure to meet you, Ash—can I call you Ash?"
"Of course," she said with a smile.
He gave out a relieving laugh, "Cool cool," Chris set his arms on the table, "So, how did you and Sam meet?"
"We are both taking environmental science and the teacher pair us up for a project in January."
Sam entered the conversation, "We had to create a community project to inform and educate people on an environmental issue."
Josh pitched in, "Ah, I remember you talked to my sisters and I about this," he then teased, "It was way out of your element, for sure." Sam just shook her head at him with a smile.
Samantha is definitely one of those health and save-the-trees type of people. She was vegan, as mentioned before, and also a pacifist(meaning she is anti-violence). Most of her pastime is helping the environment and volunteering with animal hospitals and marine life. Her friends don't always see her point of view on her beliefs and make fun of her for it, but she didn't care. Being able to be apart of those corporations made her feel like she was making a difference.
Sam ignored him and continued, "Yeah, well, since then, Ashley and I started talking non-stop. We saw each other so much from working on the assignment that we got to know each other much more."
Chris nodded at the tale, "That's pretty cool." He made eye contact with Ashley as she looked up, her delicate green eyes tracing him. His heart began to beat faster. He suddenly felt himself get anxious as she stared at him...
Sam put her arm around Ashley, "You know what else is so cool about Ashley? She's one smart cookie."
Ashley covered her cheek with her hand, "Sam, I'm not that smart."
"Oh, don't kid yourself!" Sam turned to the boys, "Ashley has been on the honor roll 4 years in a row!"
"I won't if I don't bring up my AP Calculus grade...I have no idea what is going on in that class sometimes."
Out of nowhere, Chris speaks, "I could help with that."
Josh and Sam look at him with wide eyes.
Chris stuttered out his explanation, "I took AP Calc last year and I absolutely loved it. I remember most of the curriculum in that class. W-What are you learning right now?"
Ashley's cheeks were noticeably redder, "Uh...applications of integrations."
"Well, I'll be more than happy to help you with it—if you want me to of course."
"S-Sure," Ashley fixed the beanie on her head, "I needed to find a tutor anyways..thank you."
The two shared a smile and then Ashley got up, "I'll be back, I'm gonna use the restroom." Without anything else, Ash headed towards a hallway to the bathroom.
Josh and Sam sat there in silence processing what had just occurred. They both looked at each other knowingly confused and then turned to the antsy Chris.
"What was that?" Josh asked with a smirk.
Chris tried to play it off by questioning his friend, "What was what? She needed help with her class and I thought it would be an opportunity to take what I learned in high school and put it to good use."
The other two put their elbows on the table, placing their heads in their hands. They gave a kiddish grin at the uncomfortable boy.
Chris's face started to turn red, "Come on, I'm serious."
"The spark was burning my eyes, Chris. Don't tell me there wasn't any," Samantha stated, obviously invested.
Josh poked at his friend's reddened cheeks, "Sam, look, he's blushing!"
"Dude, stop!" Chris whacked Josh's arm away from him, now pulling his hood over his head.
Sam couldn't help but awe, "Chris, you're so crushing right now!"
"Am not!"
"Then tell me that she's NOT pretty."
Josh and Sam waited for a response, their eyebrows raising simultaneously. Chris was about to say something but no words came out. He couldn't do it. From only meeting Ashley once, there was nothing negative he could think of. She seemed sweet, smart and...
Chris stood up eruptive from the booth, "I need coffee." And with that, he headed to the cashier desk in a hurry.
Josh and Sam both look back at each other and laughed. Josh whispered to the girl across from him, "He's definitely got the hots for Ashley."
"I know right! It's so obvious!"
"He has never acted so nervous since we took the first SAT's in junior year," Josh began to laugh at the memory, "Quite honestly, I don't think he's ever really liked a girl either. He may not even notice himself catching feelings."
"Well, maybe he just needs a little nudge," Sam said with a wink. She and Josh thus did their handshake that they created a year or two ago. It had been a while so surely there would be a mistake.
Josh looked at her weirdly when she added a new move, "Where did that come from?"
"There wasn't an explosion noise?" Sam laughed.
"No."
"Well, let's add it." And so they attempted their handshake again while adding the "whoosh" noise at the end.
"Awe come on, Josh. It wouldn't kill you to put a little more effort," Sam shoved Josh softly, holding her hand on his arm as they both laughed.
