Emily Davis walked down the hall after spending 30 minutes deciding what boots matched her sweater. She stopped in mid-stride second-guessing her choice for the millionth time.
"Maybe some earring will tie the look together, " she mumbled to herself, glancing at her reflection in the hall mirror.
It was 7:45 in the morning and Emily had to pick up her friend before school started. If finding outfits in her closet wasn't so difficult, she could find more time to apply her makeup or add accessories...
"Emily!"
"Coming, dad, " she replied after fidgeting with her sweater cuffs. Emily walked towards the kitchen where her father leaned on the counter, reading the daily newspaper.
Emily stood in front of him, standing straighter than she was before, "Yes, dad?"
The man shifts his eyes forward at her, his other facial features covered, "How did you do on the novel test in your Honors English class at school yesterday?"
"I got a 93 out of 100."
Mr. Davis flinches at her response, beginning to fold his paper, "93?"
Em doesn't leave her father's eye contact, "It's an A-."
"An A- is barely passing. One question wrong you could have lost your spot on the honor roll." Her father walks over to the coffee maker and begins to brew the coffee grounds.
Emily pulls a strand of hair from her face behind her ear, "I'll do better next time, father."
"You better, " he turns to her and comments, "why don't you add a half an hour of reading before bed tonight to boost your brain activity."
"Sure thing, " Emily spun around and headed back to the room with an uncontrollable eye roll.

"Can you believe him? I try so hard in this ridiculous honors class, and it sure doesn't help when my teacher is so full of crap, " Emily ranted, sitting with her arms crossed in her Lambo.
Jessica Riley sat in the passenger seat reapplying her mascara, "My parents never ask about my grades. At least your dad cares about how well you do."
Em cocked a laugh, "That's funny. All my dad cares about is how well his household presents itself."
"I mean, who wouldn't want a perfect family? Besides, looks are what gets you somewhere in life."
Emily and Jessica. Both caught up in appearances and how the world views them. What a coincidence that these two are best friends? They've only been friends for a few months but no one would have ever guessed it.
After a pause, Jess pulls out her cell phone, "Guess who sent me a dm on Instagram."
"Who?"
"Ryan Matthews."
Emily smirked, "I knew that guy had a thing for you."
Jess continued to stare at the message, "Well yeah. He was definitely flirting with me in 5th period."
"Did you reply back?"
The blonde headed friend shut her phone off, "I'll wait until we get to school." Emily looked confused but the realized her friend's tactics, "Playing hard to get?"
"Duh," Jessica stared at her appearance in the side mirrors, "You going to talk to Johnny Stevens?"
"I'll have him come to me first," Emily replied, starting up her car.
Jess let out a laugh, "Alright, Em. Taking after me now I see."
Emily didn't answer. She turned on the car radio and sped onto the road, the fresh wheels squealing against the concrete.
Unlike Jessica, Emily wasn't much of the flirty type. And frankly, she didn't quite like Johnny. He was just attractive and available, and he seemed to be interested in her.
Jessica was good at getting guys because she felt content having them around. She had boys frailing for her attention, and will even tease with their hearts if it meant they continued their affection. Yes, that means she is a player but Jess never acknowledges her behavior as so. For the time being, Emily hadn't really found a man who has caught her attention.
Emily and Jessica finally park in the student parking lot. Em took the keys out of the ignition and opened her car door, and Jess did the same. Suddenly, there was a burst of laughter beside the vehicle;
"You have to be an idiot to spray paint the principles car."
"Well, he sure is one. He fricken got suspended for a week."
Jessica has her eyes glued to her phone again, "What's going on?"
"I don't know." Emily barely heard what the conversation was. Her eyes persisted to follow one particular person in the group; Mike Monroe.
