It wasn't just the feeling of a bad day. First of all, you searched your entire house for your favourite sweater. How could one possibly lose their sweater in their own home? Next, you spilt an entire cup of coffee on the floor. If that wasn't enough, you then had to save your ravenous cat from a caffeine poisoning.
When you looked outside the door, the packages you had ordered online hadn't arrived yet. You had shopped online for Christmas presents, and it was getting closer to Christmas every day. The closer it got, the more you were convinced they had accidentally forgotten about your order and you were going to gift your friends horrible, last-minute Christmas presents again.
Next, you decided to bake cookies to make your day at least a tiny bit better. Of course, you had to burn them. And not just the cookies, you also burned your hand trying to save them. It was no use.
Lastly, the worst of all things happened. The cute boy you had made plans with for the evening, called you. He had forgotten about your date and instead arranged a dinner with his parents. Apparently he didn't get to see them very often, so you couldn't even bring up the courage to be angry at him.
Now, there was only one last thing that could cheer you up. You knew this was a terrible idea from the start. But you were determined and you didn't want to sit around and be upset all day. You rummaged through your Christmas decorations and found it. Your outdoor Christmas lights. You knew looking at your decorated house would make you feel better, so you had to do this, no matter how much would go wrong.
One thing was sure, the cold wasn't going to bother you. Your fluffiest sweater with your thickest jacket, plus an endlessly long scarf and a warm hat made you not only look ridiculous, but you also felt a little like a penguin. Adorable, but also not able to move in a natural-looking way. You told yourself that was just the look you were going for and set up the ladder in front of your house.
Setting one foot above the other, you began climbing it. A mess of Christmas lights in your hands, you were trying hard not to look down. Suddenly, a voice behind you made you jump.
"Good day, y/n!" your old neighbour shouted from the street.
You almost lost balance, waving your arms in the air dramatically. Your neighbour interpreted your struggle as a friendly gesture and waved back, smiling. Thankfully, you weren't laying on the ground as you had feared it. You held onto the railing of the ladder as you watched your neighbour walk away, a bitter expression on your face. You realized once more how dumb this idea was. You were one to get startled extremely easily. For about ten minutes, you struggled with the lights, not really making any process at all. Last year, your friend helped you with this, and it went perfectly. This year, you had made the wrong decision. Every time you had fixed a part of the lights and proceeded to the next part, the previous lights fell from the roof. After fifteen minutes, you had no more concept of time and also didn't realize what was about to happen.
