03| Boring Guys Get Crushed Like Gnats
"This sucks." Blaze informed me as she stepped over a huge rock. "Ow. Something bit me."
"Tell me about it." I sighed. I had honestly expected way more than any of what was happening.
Out of all of us, Brad seemed to be the only one who didn't mind getting up at early in the morning to trek towards the beach. He seemed to be humming to Bob the Builder's theme song and walking in bouncy steps.
I felt like groaning. It was way to early to be so cheerful.
First of all, I hadn't really appreciated it when I was made to sleep in a tent with Rachel last night. I mean, I don't have anything against her, but she was talking so much I just couldn't sleep. Plus the ground was itchy and hard, and I felt like bugs were crawling into my sleeping bag every two seconds.
Then Shane had to wake me up at six in the morning by throwing a bucket of water on me. I mean, seriously? In his defense, everyone else was already up and I just wasn't budging from the bed, but I think he deserved that kick in the gut.
Rose the event organiser (her name was Rose right?) had woken everyone up from their tents and after a refreshing breakfast of a slice of toast and a tetrapack juice each (yippee!), we had to leave early in the morning. Right now, we were trekking to the beach, where we would be told about our first task.
After about five minutes of walking, we finally came to the beach. I'd expected to probably see a whale or something equally big for the task, but there was only a mini bus there.
"Okay so guys," Rose announced, coming in front and facing us all, "We're driving to a place, and it's really far. I mean really far, so you can probably sleep in the bus or whatever. And this task is a group task. So I'm dividing up the teams now."
My only thought for a team was Blaze. I didn't know anyone else very well, but Blaze and I had become friends last night and she was my best choice in these Hunger Games.
Rose beckoned a guy standing behind us with a large box and he scrambled over and put the box down in front of her.
"You will be split up into teams of two. In this box I have ten caps of five different colours. You randomly pick one. Whoever picks the same colour as you is your partner. Clear?"
Everyone nodded, and one by one we went to take our caps. I was last. Brad got paired up with Kay, Drake with Rachel, and then Nick with Leah.
Which meant that if Shane and Alex got paired up, I would be with Blaze. Alex went and chose a blue cap. Then Blaze stepped forward and rummaged her hand around to feel the caps. She finally pulled out a blue cap.
Yes. Now Shane only needs to pick red and I'll be fine. But of course Shane had to go and pick the blue cap. Which meant that I was stuck with Alex, and judging by his behavior yesterday, I definitely wasn't okay with it.
We could only have one bitch aboard, and there was definitely no space for him after me. This imposter needed to get his ass kicked.
I grumpily took the last cap from Rose and went and stood next to Alex. I was already in a bad mood, and Rose worsened it.
"And guys, you're sitting with your partners in the bus."
This was going to be a long ride.
--
I was correct. It was a long ride. Quite literally, since we reached by about noon.
We'd left by about seven and stopped for an hour long break in the middle. The bus was cool, with reclining chairs, a bathroom and a mini fridge and everything.
