"He'll be down soon." Roman announced to the other traits once he made it into the common area.
Patton turned around and threw the towel on the counter, "Okay, I put his food under a plate so it'd stay warm. What do you plan on doing today?"
Roman thought for a second, "Well, I do need to get started on the script for the next video, however, I need to tell you something." He wanted to tell Patton and Logan about the bruise. It hadn't looked like something you could get from a fall, or an accident. And he would know; the creative side, for all his adventuring and sword fights, was not the most graceful of all the sides, and was prone to getting hurt. No, this had looked closer to the injuries attained after a battle. Someone had intentionally hurt Anxiety.
Patton scrunched his eyebrows in confusion and worry, "Sure, whats up?"
"I saw bruises on Anxiety." Roman said, waiting for Patton's reaction.
Patton gasped slightly, "Bruises? I didn't see any bruises yesterday. Maybe he fell?"
Roman shook his head, "No, I get enough bruises to know that this was intentional. Someone hurt him."
Now Patton shook his head, "How do you know that? Bruises all look the same."
"Well, for one thing, the bruises were shaped like hand prints." Roman answered.
Patton felt tears welling up at the thought of someone hurting his precious anxious friend. He tried to think of something else to say, but his attention was drawn to the hall as Anxiety entered cautiously.
He quickly wiped his eyes and smiled, "Hey Anxiety! Your food is under that plate, I kept it warm for you!"
The anxious trait nodded slightly in response, and put his hood up. He walked over and looked at the table with one plate on it, "This one?" he asked.
Patton nodded, "Yep! Hey, could you come sit in the living room while you're eating? We wanna talk to you about something."
Virgil froze, what did they want? Were they gonna yell at him? Were they going to tell him he was annoying and kick him out of the Light side? Oh, god he was going to have to go back to living with Deceit and Remus full time!
Virgil looked up at Patton, and the room seemed to spin and swirl. It seemed like there was something heavy sitting on his chest, suffocating him. He couldn't focus, or breathe. There was too much, too much everything. Too much emotion, too much noise, too much movement, and not enough air.
"Hey, kiddo, can you focus on me? Just breathe. In and out, come on." Patton had knelt down next to him on the floor, when did he get on the floor?
Anxiety looked away, he felt as if he looked the moral side in the eyes he might die. Patton reached out and set a hand on Virgil's back, and the anxious trait flinched away. The spot where Patton had touched him felt uncomfortable, as if the skin wasn't part of his body anymore. He forced himself to slow his thoughts and calm down.
The other sides don't need to deal with you right now, he told himself. He took a few shaky breaths and clenched his fists, trying to focus on bringing himself back to reality. After what seemed like an eternity of clearing his mind of static and panic, he forced his eyes up to meet the other sides' concerned faces.
He looked away again, feeling guilty for drawing their attention and bothering them, "I'm sorry," he said, crossing his arms over his chest in an attempt to feel protected.
Patton frowned, "You don't need to apologize. All of your emotions are valid, and sometimes they can be too much for you. Do you want to move to somewhere more comfortable?"
Anxiety nodded, he opened his mouth, and tried to say something, anything. To apologize again, but he couldn't. For whatever reason, his vocal cords had chosen now to abandon him. So instead of talking he just kept nodding.
He slowly stood up, flinching away from Roman's attempts to help him, and made his way to the couch and sat down.
He tried talking again, and found that he could, thankfully. "I- what did you want to talk about?" he asked.
Logan spoke up, "We don't have to have this conversation now. You are most likely not in the best mental state, and this topic may upset you."
Roman and Patton nodded in agreement, but Virgil shook his head, "No, if we put this off I'll just get more anxious. What did you what?"
Logan looked towards Roman and Patton, silently asking of one of them would lead the conversation.
Roman nodded imperceptibly and took the lead, "Anxiety, are you okay?"
Virgil was confused, "What? Yeah, I'm fine."
Roman shook his head, "No, you're not. You've been acting weird lately. You never come out of your room except for food, and, I'm sorry, but you've been really rude, okay?"
Patton interjected, "Hey, I'm sure there's a nicer way to say that Roman. Anxiety, what Roman's trying to say is that we're worried about you. Yesterday we hurt you, and we're sorry. We want to know if there's anything we can help you with."
Logan and Roman nodded supportively.
Virgil was on the verge of crying, he thought they were going to yell at him. He was prepared for yelling, he was even prepared to be hurt, but this? This he had no idea how to deal with. So his mind did what it always did when he was confronted with something he didn't know how to deal with. It regressed.
A few tears leaked out of his deep brown eyes, then a waterfall of salt and relief began to fall.
He buried his head in Patton's shoulder and sobbed.
