in the imagination

___

Roman stalked through the halls of his palace. Down the steps, down, down, down to a dark cavern. He was as low as you could go, as far down, as hidden from the surface as you could go. through countless security checks, and into a small room, housing two cells. They were tiny, and not luxurious in the slightest.

They were akin to ancient prison cells, hard stone and metal bars. It was freezing down there, and it was fitting.

Each cell housed one prisoner. Remus sat chained in one, and Deceit in the other.

Deceit was clearly the greater evil here, the mastermind behind Anxiety's pain.

The snake stared back at Roman, as if daring him to confront him. The prince met his gaze with iron hard eyes. He stalked over to  the cell with his blood burning. He hadn't been in the presence of the two dark sides since before he learned about how they had treated Anxiety, and he was going to give them a piece of his mind.

Deceit's face split into a wide, creepy smile that relayed perfectly his lack of empathy and guilt, "Roman, how nice of you to come for a visit. Are you here to let me out? Finally realized how much of an overreaction you had?"

Roman's rage flared higher and hotter. His entire being was consumed by anger and hate for the side in front of him, "Listen, you fuc-"

"Ah-ah-ah, Roman. Is that very princely language?" Deceit was in control, he knew what he was doing, he enjoyed mocking and provoking the prince, "Tell me, have you fucked him yet? Have you made him your little slut? That's all he's good for, you know. Bending over and taking a cock. He says he doesn't, but he really loves it. He's worthless." He smirked wider at the princes rage.

Roman exploded, "You slimy motherfucking snake! Wipe that goddamn smirk off your face. How- how can you- how -" He faltered, his anger flickering for a moment, being replaced by overwhelming sadness and hopelessness. Anxiety- Anxiety had been in a relationship with this heartless creature, had- had endured this sort of thing all the time. He couldn't even fathom it.

Tears fell from his eyes, angry tears. Tears that held all of his worry and fear for his chemically imbalances romance. Tears that were formed from his unrelenting rage and anger towards the two dark sides that had put his friend through so much torment.

"He's not." Princey's voice was sharp and cold, even though salt dripped down his face. "He's not worthless. He is one of the most wonderful, amazing people I know. And he never  wanted you to fuck him like you did. You hurt one of my best friends, in a horrible, horrible way. And you- you're not even sorry. You don't even- you don't even care." Roman blinked the tears away, but it was fruitless.

"Nothing I can do will ever make up for leaving him with you. But I'm going to try as hard as I can to undo the damage you did. I'm going to make him feel so loved, so cared for, so protected, that you and the pain you inflicted fade from his mind. Because goddammit- I love him so much."

Deceit rolled his eyes, "What an inspiring speech. You couldn't save him before, what makes you think you can now? You're useless, just like him. And you will never be anything more than the wannabe prince who tries too hard and fails."

Roman clenched his fists and blinked through the tears still pooled in his eyes. He glared at Deceit with eyes like knives. He desperately tried to think of something- anything- that he could say to counter the snakes accusations. But what was the point? He couldn't very well tell someone they were wrong, when he believed them to be right.

So he left.

Roman's room

___

"I had to get out of there, I- I can't-" Roman's voice shook brokenly. He buried his face further into Logan's shoulder, his sobs shaking his entire body.

"Shush, dearest. It's alright, I've got you. I've got you." Logan whispered softly into his beloved's ear. They sat on Roman's bed, rocking gently for a while, only to be woken from their lull by a sharp knock on the door.

"Hey, are you okay? You guys have been up here forever, the foods getting cold." Logan realized that he never returned to Patton, of course he came looking for them.  Logan looked into Roman's eyes, asking silently if it was alright to let their other boyfriend in. Roman nodded, sitting up and wiping his eyes.

"You may come in, Patton." Logan glanced at the door. Patton entered the room and immediately saw Roman's state.

"Ro-bear! What's wrong?" He ran over and sat next to his boyfriends on the bed.

Roman smiled half-heartedly at the fatherly trait, "I- I had a run in with those monsters and got a bit emotional. I'm alright, I promise. Its just- Deceit said some uncomfortable truths. Ironic for someone who is the embodiment of lies, right?"

Logan shook his head, "Roman, what he said were lies. Yes, we failed to help Anxiety before, but that does not mean we will fail in our attempts now. We will learn from our mistakes, and I believe that we will be able to right what happened. You are not useless."

Roman looked away.

"Hey, how would you like to go eat lunch, huh? Anxiety already ate while you two were up here, so the kitchen's empty. Maybe you'll feel better with something in your stomach." Patton stood up and extended a hand to help pull Roman up.

The princely side smiled again, "Yeah, that sounds good."
