Jodie began to grow accustomed, slowly but steadily, to her cell in which she slept. Got used to the fences in prison, and the biters on the outside. Got used to the constant work in prison, to Cole's little gift for her when he came back from a tour, to the baby, the other residents, the bullying of the other children because of her muteness. But unfortunately, she didn't get used to the creativity of it and when it took place. And there was something else she didn't get used to, this inner restlessness inside her, like she was trapped. She knew that the fences and walls of the prison protected her, but at the same time she felt trapped and captured. Before her, she could always see the woods that were laying lurking green in front of her when she stood by the fences. The fences were the only thing separating her from it. What she wouldn't give to go back to the woods, breathe in the air, maybe set traps again to catch animals, or just enjoy the silence and also the sounds there. But the exit was denied to all children, only the people who went on tour now and then or Daryl who went hunting were allowed to go outside. Everyone else was locked in.

Jodie knew it was for her own safety, but she missed the freedom outside. So she tried to distract herself from that thought as often as possible by taking on various tasks. Most kids her age only helped in the kitchen, with the laundry, or looked after Judith. But since Jodie had already helped by her own efforts to kill biters at the fence, and Cole had also already told Rick that she was already very good with firearms, Jodie was one of the only children to help clean the guns and take out biters on the fence.

And Rick promised Jodie that he would think about putting her on guard duty. After all, Jodie had a little variety in prison and was happy about it. It had already been three months since they arrived here in prison, and Jodie made a line in her diary for every day. Each day another success, she had survived, the biters, other people, the children's teasing's.

She's been more concerned about that lately. She just hoped it would stop if she ignored Roderick and the others long enough. But things got worse and Roderick didn't seem to care how far he went with his pranks and other humiliations. Just like the other kids, they just didn't understand Jodie. Didn't understand her muteness and distance. She seemed like an alien to them and to other adults, even though they had already resigned themselves to Jodie's silence. For weeks, a lot of adults had tried every possibility. But at some point, they gave up, also because Cole stepped in and said there was no point and Jodie would talk if she felt ready.

Jodie was grateful to Cole for accepting her and seemingly not thinking of her as crazy, like the others. He was like a big brother to her.

He was one of the few people that Jodie still cared about what he thought about her. He was her only family, her support. But now there were other people who had become important to her as well. She liked Carl and Beth very much, because they were the only ones her age who didn't care much for her muteness and yet managed to treat her as normally as possible. She'd already seen that they'd seen a lot of bad things, even if she didn't know what they'd been through.

She also liked Rick. He was authoritarian, always seemed to find the right solution, and he was kind and understanding when you made a mistake. But he was also able to crack down on what Jodie thought was right, but at the same time made her a little scared, because it reminded her a little bit of Melvin.

She also liked Carol and Glenn, who were both very nice to her and seemed to feel sorry for her too, because she didn't speak.

And then there was Daryl. She had developed a fascination for him since she met him. Even though he often seemed to express with his entire body language that he preferred to be left alone, Jodie couldn't prevent her from being attracted to him. She wasn't in love with him, she was sure of it, but she still kind of liked him. Above all, she also envied him for his freedom.
