The light laughs of children could be heard through the dismal halls of a hospital.
The sound was so out of place that the other occupants might've thought they were dreaming. But they weren't.
Austin and Neito continued their play, ignoring the stir that they were making with their lively chatter.
They were only 7.

A medical intern, Mai Haluna, managed to come across their fantasy land.
"Hello there. Where are your parents?"

Austin and Neito looked up at this interruption.
"Daddy's in sur-ga-ry." Austin brightly answered
Neito chose to stay quiet and observe this stranger.

"Surgery? Is there anyone else with you?" Mai was quite surprised that a doctor would leave two kids alone while taking a patient into surgery without assigning a nurse to take care of them.

"Auntie was here but she had to perform the sur-ga-ry." Austin giggled.
He finished the sentence smiling proudly before looking back at Neito, who was still watching the unknown stranger by the door.

"Oh, who brought you here then?"
"We walked, Mommy was out working and we really wanted to see Daddy, right Nei?"
Neito nodded, trying to hide himself behind his twin, he had decided that he didn't like this woman.
Mai was very conflicted.
On one hand, both of the kids shouldn't be here at all.
But on the other, they just wanted to see their Father.

"Who...is your Auntie?" She cautiously asked.

"Raina Monoma." Neito answered. He never really wanted to come but wherever Austin went, he went.

"Raina...Monoma..." A realisation hit Mai.
Raina Monoma was one of the leading doctors at this hospital. Her astounding quirk allowed her to identify illnesses but be unable to contract them herself. And these were her nephews.

"Oh well I..." Mai was once again unaware of how to deal with this situation.

"Thanks for taking care of them Intern, I can take it from here." A voice sounded from behind her. Both kids ran forward to the waiting arms of their loving Auntie.

"You're welcome Doctor Monoma." Mai slightly bowed her head in apology before quickly exiting the room as to not fangirl and embarrass herself in front of another person.

Raina had a tough decision now. Tell her nephews the truth and leave them to their mother (who she had never really liked), or save them. She was moving to England in a few weeks, she couldn't take both of them...
You see, Raina was extremely close with her brother Maurice. So close that she could tell he was unhappy in his marriage. So close that she could tell when there was something more going on between him and that nice new supervisee from work. They made a cute couple, she had to admit. Plus it was funny that in the end, both siblings turned out gay.
But Maurice fell ill, and he fell hard.
His wife continued to pester him for this and that, not caring that he wasn't right physically.
Raina wasn't able to save him.

The tears came all at once, like rainfall.
"I'm so sorry kids. I'm so, so sorry." She weeper into their shoulders.
Both twins linked hands, understanding what this meant. They all fell into silence.

Eventually, Raina spoke again.
"Let's go home." The sentence was short and sweet.
The car ride was silent.

...

"Is he? Is he really?" Silvia wept. She wasn't the best wife at times but she still loved him.
So much.
"He's gone. I'm sorry," But as Raina held her, a flush of anger came to her.
"But he was unhappy Silvia, he was very unhappy."

"How would you know? Everything was fine. Everything was good-"

"No it wasn't! He was cheating on you Silvia! With another man! I'm sorry to tell you this but your marriage wasn't all sunshine and rainbows!"

Silvia glared harshly at the woman in front of her. "You're lying. The Maurice I know wouldn't do that."

"The Maurice you know did do that! He was gay just as I am!"

"No he wasn't!"

"He was! He-" Raina stopped speaking.

"He wouldn't love another man. He was a devout Christian as am I. No man shall lay with another under gods will." Her glare intensified.
"You sinner"

This broke Raina. Her own brother died today.
This was the last straw.
She stormed upstairs and grabbed Austin by the shoulders.
"Aussie, you need to pack, okay? Just take the essentials." She tried to look as warm as possible.
Austin ran into his room, packing his favourite toys and a few clothes. Including some of his favourite skirts from a box in his closet and his ballet shoes.
He ran out into the hallway with his bag and was shooed our the door by his Auntie.

"What about Nei?" He whimpered, he only understood half of what was happening.

"Nei...has to stay. You'll see each other again I promise!" She quickly added to calm Austin.

"Okay..." Austin looked out the window at the house that was falling further and further behind them.
"Auntie?..."

"Yes Aussie?"

"Can you...call me Audrey from now on? Please..."

"Okay, Audie."

"And can you call me ...your niece?"

"Of course Audie."
