It was a very long walk, and Lori and Dorothy had just reached a beach with blue sand.
"This day is kinda gratifying, Dorothy," Lori smiled. "We finally reunited with Momma for a while. After what happened last night—not to mention that bump on my head—I really needed that hug."
Suddenly, a voice rang out, "You want a hug? Why didn't you just say so?"
"Who's there?" Lori gulped.
"That would be me," that voice rang out again.
Lori looked up to find a seagull, and Dorothy meowed viciously. "It's okay, Dorothy," she said. "Hi, this is my cat, Dorothy, and I'm Lori Prescott."
"I'm Scuttle," Scuttle smiled. "Now what's in that thing you've got there?"
"It's my violin—or fiddle," Lori replied. "I play music on it." She took out her violin and played a little music.
"Beautiful," Scuttle smiled. "What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?"
"It depends on the genre of music you play," Lori declared. "When you play classical music, it's a violin." She played a little bit of Swan Lake. "When you play folk, country, or bluegrass, it's a fiddle." She played a bluegrass tune.
"Delightful," Scuttle smiled. "It must take a lot of brains to do that. If I had brains, I'd make great music, too."
"What would you do with a brain if you had one?" Lori asked.
"Why, if I had a brain, I could...," Scuttle began. Then he started singing while Lori played her violin.
SCUTTLE: I could while away the hours
Conferring with the flowers
Consulting with the rain
And my head, I'd be scratching
While my thoughts were busy hatching
If I only had a brain
I'd unravel every riddle
For any individual
In trouble or in pain
LORI: With the thoughts you'd be thinking
You could be another Lincoln
If you only had a brain
SCUTTLE: Oh, I could tell you why
The ocean's near the shore
I could think the things I never thunk before
And then I'd sit and think some more
I would not be just a nothing
My head all full of stuffing
My heart all full of pain
I would dance and be merry
Life would be a ding-a-derry
If I only had a brain
Lori had an idea. "Maybe you ought to join me and Dorothy on our way to see the Wizard of Oz," she suggested. "He's going to send us home to Kansas, and I'm sure he'll help you get a brain." She put her violin back in its case.
"Hooray!" Scuttle beamed. "We're off to see a Wizard!"
"Off we go," Lori smiled. She skipped down the road with Dorothy at her feet and Scuttle flying by her side, and they sang their travel song.
We're off to see the Wizard
The wonderful Wizard of Oz
We hear that he is a whiz of a whiz if ever a whiz there was
If ever oh ever a whiz there was
The Wizard of Oz is one because, because, because, because, because, because, because of the wonderful things he does
We're off to see the Wizard
The wonderful Wizard of Oz!
