Two months after Ali's death...
Leiny was finally deemed fit to return to ground work, which was great for her. She'd been feeling restless the past month, since recovering from the initial shock and grief. She'd found herself obsessing over all the information Evie and Mr. Green gathered. She'd also taken to cleaning Jacobs room when he was out, putting away all his papers regarding the Rooks and neatly folding his clothes.
Plus, there was even more trouble than usual between the twins. Since Jacob had killed Twopenny, nearly crashing the economy, Evie had been furious.
The only place other than the train, Leiny had been going lately, was to see Alexander Bell... on Jacob's watch, obviously.
"So these 'Voltaic bombs' work using electrical energy thats been converted from chemical energy, through a reaction?"
"In leymans terms, yes." Alexander chuckled, as the Leiny leaned over the table, examining his new device.
"That's incredible, Aleck." She said, slumping back.
"Ahh, Leiny, your flattery is always a pleasure."
"As are the neat toys you give us," Leiny said, rolling a bomb between her long fingers.
"Time for me," Jacob leaned over her, deftly flicking the bomb from her hand into his own, "to try them out."
"Not fair!" Leiny objected. "I'm not going to break."
"If I were worried about you breaking, I would have left you at the train, sweetheart."
"I strongly object to both-"
"Leiny. Darling. I can handle a few thugs for Aleck on my own. Aleck, would you mind fixing Leiny some tea while she waits for us?"
"Ah, yes. Of course." Alexander responded, flitting about while he began preparing tea.
Meanwhile, Leiny set about glaring at Jacob.
"I dislike you."
"Oh my, whatever shall I do?" Jacob smirked back at her.
"Wanker."
"Along with every other man in the Empire, love."
"Here you go, Leiny." Alexander set a cup of tea down in front of her, along with some cakes and a large physics textbook. Her eyes lit up a little at the sight of the book. "Its a bit of a drag, really. Though I felt you may be interested."
"Thank you, Aleck." She replied, giving him a small smile as she flicked it open.
"Oh- I almost forgot, put these in your boots. They will protect you from any voltaic discharge... I er, think." Aleck handed them black rods of some unknown material.
"You should have let Jacob go in without one." Leiny snapped.
"She's just mad because she's not allowed back in action." Jecob explained to Alexander.
"By your authority, Mr. Frye. Evie said I could if I felt I was ready. I believe I have a favourite twin, now. One who doesn't molly-coddle me."
"You'd think that meant I didn't care." Jacob said to Alexander.
"Haha, hell hath no fire like a womans scorn, Mr. Frye." He chuckled.
"Indeed... or the fire of the thugs outside your door..." Jacob pointed out.
"Ah, yes. We should take care of them. You stay hidden, Mr. Frye."
