He nodded at my response with another one of his genuine smiles, and although his eyes sparkled like bright stars in the night sky they held a dull hum of pain and anguish. I wanted to ask him about it. I wanted to ask why this seemingly happy teen looked so full of sadness. But I refrained from doing so because I knew that I'd hit a very painful nerve. There was just something about him that made me want to protect him. To just hold him in my arms. My arms wrapped around his toned torso, with my head gently resting on his as I tell him sweet nothings and reassuring words. His arms would be tightly wrapped around my waist, with his head rested against my shoulder and his face nuzzled closely into the crook of my neck as his breath gently brushes against my neck, tickling slightly.
"Newt," His name just rolled off my tongue as I stared at him, waiting for his approval to continue, "Yeah?" He looked at me with a scrunched up face and furrowed brows, looking almost child-like. "What's it like, living here?" I motioned towards the glade as a whole. I knew what was in the maze, but I didn't know what it was like to have to live with that danger. To have to stand, or run, face to face with danger but more importantly death. But than again, I don't think I'd want to. "Well, it's nice if ya stay in the glade. Quiet and peaceful. But out there," he pointed out the little window and towards the stone walls of the maze, "That's a whole different story." A distant look spread through his eyes as he stared at the walls. Those walls that trapped them all. At first I thought against it, but as I saw his pained face I decided to grab his hand and hold it in a means if comfort. He, I can only assume, absentmindedly squeezed my hand before whipping his head in my direction "Are you okay?" I whispered, worried that I'd upset him. But to my surprise, he smiled before gently kissing the tips of my hand "You should get some rest." He smile softly as he stood up, but before he walked to the exit I grabbed his hand an placed the crumpled ball that was previously in my pocket into his hand. He looked at me oddly for a moment until I elaborated "It was in my pocket. It might be important." which he nodded to. Before he exited the room he turned back towards me "Goodnight, Leo." He said with an unusual light in his eyes before blowing me a kiss. Because of his actions my face heated up substantially, but I still couldn't help the laugh that escaped my lips "Goodnight." I could tell that a wide smile was eminent on my face.
As soon as he left the room I felt as if I was missing something. I don't know why nor do I know what has made me feel like this, but at this very moment I was too tired to try to even think about figuring out why. With a light shake of my head I laid back down onto the make-shift bed and stared thoughtlessly up at the patched wood ceiling. Sooner than I thought though, I fell into a dream-like state that couldn't even be called sleep.
