(This is parts one and two; part two is marked below for anyone who has already read it)

Eddie hated the holidays.

He used to love them, but times had changed. When he was younger, he loved to go with his dad to pick out a new ornament, which made up for not being allowed to get a real tree, due to his allergies.

Frank and Eddie would spend the whole day making their tree their own, with the box of ornaments, the lights, and the star on top. It was the best time of the year.

Until Eddie was fourteen.

It had been Christmas Eve, the first time that their tree wasn't decorated weeks in advance. They'd been having troubles with the lights and lots of other things to worry about. He was told to stay home while his mother and father went out to get more lights, since Eddie was sick and their old ones were going out. It had been around an hour when Eddie started to feel anxious, knowing that the full trip, even in the ice and snow, should've only been around thirty minutes.

He was only more terrified when someone knocked on the door, the banging echoing through the house. Anxiously, Eddie stood up, covered in his blankets, and opened the door.

Two police men stood on the other side.

"Where are my parents?" Eddie asked weakly, coughing into his elbow and shivering at the cool air entering his home.

One of the officers knelt down, a pained expression on her face. "You need to come with us, honey," she said, and Eddie immediately understood something bad had happened.

He threw on a pair of shoes and his winter coat. They drove to the police station, and Eddie was brought into a warm room that resembled an office.

"Are you Eddie Kaspbrak?" the police officer who had brought him there asked.

Eddie nodded. He didn't want to speak to the officer. He wanted to go home and watch movies and sit in his dad's lap and feel safe.

"I'm so sorry," the officer said, Eddie's obvious knowledge of an incident showing in his face. "Your parents got into an accident because of the ice."

Eddie snuffed, feeling tears form in his eyes. "They're not okay?" he asked, finally making eye contact with the officer.

She shook her head. "I'm so sorry. They died on impact," she said, and Eddie started sobbing.

He kept crying until he couldn't breathe, thankfully the officer handing him an inhaler. When he was able to breathe again, she explained what would happen to him.

"We have no records of any other family for you to stay with, so we may have to send you to a group home. For tonight we'll keep you here, because going to any form of group home on Christmas will be overwhelming."

Eddie nodded, tears still falling down his cheeks. "It's my fault," he whispered, more to himself than the officer.

"Honey, nothing you could have done would be able to prevent this," she said, hands on Eddie's shoulders to try to convince him he wasn't at fault.

"Yes it is!" he cried out, not stopping the officer from pulling him into a tight hug. "I was the one who said we should get new lights for the tree! It's my fault!"

The officer couldn't do anything to console him, so she sat patiently as he cried it out. She knew she couldn't do anything to change a convinced fourteen year old's mind, so she didn't try. He needed to cry it out before he came to terms with what happened.
