TWO GUNS CLICK into place.
Unfortunately, there seems to be one too many, because Goro's bushy brows pull low over his eyes.
"Wait," he snaps.
My body operates on its own. Gun raised. Ren isn't far off, caught between Goro and a pair of bounty hunters, body hunched, arms extended. His feet crunch against broken glass as he shifts, his own gun pointed at the ready. Across the garage, the door cranks to a stop.
Against blinding white light, a tall figure with a gaping nose ring aims his gun. I register the stench of pot. Beside him, a girl half his size pops a bubble of lime chewing gum. Her body is perfectly still.
Waiting.
Goro slams his hand down on his desk. "What the hell is going on?"
"This isn't my fault," snaps a low voice. "Ask her."
"Just doin' my job," sings an adolescent voice.
"When I signed with you, Touma, I didn't think you planned to bring new friends and shoot down my damn windows," snarls Goro, rounding the desk with fury. He's so furious he stops right in the crossfire. "You know how much those things cost? You wanna know how much trouble my boss is gonna get me in?"
"Bohai," hisses Ren through the earpiece.
No answer.
"Well you don't gotta worry about your boss once I get you the money," snaps Touma. "You want your share or not?"
"Of course I want my share—"
My attention strays to the cement floor where Goro's list of workers—including information about Yun's outsourced team—lies with burnt edges curling.
The earpiece comes alive with Ren's whisper. "Hina—"
"Shuddup and get out of the way," Touma's saying.
The girl pipes up. "Yeah, you old man."
Goro sputters. "Old man? And who the hell's this? You gonna let a little blind girl with chewing gum steal our bounty—"
Blind girl?
"Hina, the paper," murmurs Ren.
I shift. At the same time, a gunshot screams at my feet. My body goes still.
The girl giggles. "Looks like this little blind girl is the only one who knows what your bounty's trying to get away with."
Oh, no.
Goro spins in alarm. His eyes bug out of his face as he moves out of the crossfire toward the paper. The moment he's out of the way, Touma fires.
