A gush of wind made the leaves above rustle, sounding like a thousand voices whispering. Otherwise it was quiet. Not a single sound could be heard throughout the forest. The early morning hours had made a thick fog cover the ground. It was so thick, that if you were to set foot in the forest, your feet would disappear, and the fog would swirl around your ankles.

It was in these eerie yet peaceful mornings that a young boy wondered through the quiet forest. His chocolate brown hair was a mess. It could easily be compared to a bird's nest. His eyes were a deep chocolate brown, standing in contrast to his fair skin color.

Cody often went for walks like these in the morning. He needed the peace. The place he called home, the place that was supposed to be peaceful, was a total chaos. It was inevitable with the size his family had. He had two younger siblings. They were twins. His aunt and her boyfriend had recently moved in next door. This resulted in five children running around, screaming and playing, almost every day.

His head hurt, just thinking about it.

A movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention. He looked over, freezing on the spot.

There, bathed in the rays of the early morning sun, stood a large stag, looking right at him. Cody swallowed, looking at the animal in awe. Its eyes were filled with wisdom. As if it knew all the secrets that the universe held. As if it knew the past, present and future.

It could've just been the sunrays, but it looked as if it was radiating a warm, gentle aura that promised protection. Like a king, taking his people under his wing. Putting them, before himself.

Cody slowly, very slowly, took a step towards it. Then another. He didn't know why. He just wanted to get closer to it. As if he was drawn to it. He didn't want to scare it.

He took another step. The stag winced and then turned around, running away. He frowned, watching as it disappeared between the trees.

He looked back from where he came. The fog had cleared a bit, revealing his steps in the mud-like ground. He looked down, his shoes were smeared in mud. He sighed and turned, walking back the way he came. He needed to get to school anyways.
