Reverie felt aware of her surroundings. She was once again awake, in the hospital room. Her bedroom. She didn't know how long had passed since she had overheard that conversation between her mother and one of the nurses.
This time though, she realised she was able to move her body. She slowly began to open her eyes, they were stuck together slightly with sleep, so she had to force them open a little.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she had to close them again. A bright white light was staring down at her. It burned her eyes and made them water.
She tried to open them again. Slowly blinking her eyes open, Reverie was able to get used to the bright light. The ceiling of her room was covered in white tiles and Reverie was sure the rest of her room would be the same stark white too.
Again, the smell of disinfectant burned her nose. She groaned.
Something stirred from beside her. Slowly, although her whole body ached with pain, Reverie was able to turn her head. She saw her mother sitting beside her on one of the uncomfortable hospital chairs.
Reverie couldn't believe she had forgotten what her mother had looked like. She was gorgeous. She had long chestnut hair which was streaked with grey probably from all the sleepless nights Reverie had caused her. She was young. Younger than Reverie expected. Again, Reverie wondered how long she had been out for to be able to forget all these details.
"Mo-"
Reverie tried to speak but the dryness in her throat stopped her. She started coughing, her body and throat begging for water.
Reverie wanted to cry. So this was her life? Constant pain.
Luckily for her, her coughing must have woken her mother up. Her eyes snapped open and once she saw Reverie awake, she sat up straight in her chair.
"Reverie-"
Reverie lifted her arm. It felt like lead to do so and took a lot of her energy for this one simple task but her mother seemed to know what she wanted.
Skye adjusted her daughters bed so she was able to sit up and passed her a glass of water with a straw. Reverie gladly gulped down the water and almost cried in relief when her throat stopped burning and she was able to swallow pain free.
Now Reverie was sitting up, she was able to see the rest of her room. Reverie smiled when she saw it. She remembered when she first got diagnosed with cancer, she got told she would be staying in the hospital for a while. A while turned into three years but her mother did her best to make the dull hospital room look just like her room back at home.
The walls were covered in posters. Posters from her favourite movies and bands. She recognised movie posters such as Harry Potter and The Maze Runner. She noticed band posters such as One Direction, BLACKPINK and The 1975.
But most of her room was covered in BTS posters. She saw posters of them in a group, many of them she realised coming from the albums she had brought over the years. She saw posters of Yoongi, of the BT21 characters. It was slightly overwhelming but she loved it nonetheless.
"Reverie, honey," Skye said. Her voice sounded cautious and Reverie knew what was coming next. "I spoke to one of your nurses recently-"
Reverie looked at her mother and her heart broke. She hated that she was causing her mother so much pain. "I know, mom. I know."
Skye's eyes welled with tears. "Oh my daughter, my beautiful Reverie! What am I going to do without you?"
Reverie cried too. Skye got up and climbed into her daughters bed, cuddling up to Reverie's side.
Reverie didn't want to upset her mother more but she needed to know. "How long have I-"
Reverie couldn't bring herself to finish the sentence. Skye seemed to know what she meant though and cried harder. "T-They said about a m-month."
Reverie felt her whole world shatter. A month left. Four weeks. 28 days. For the past three years she had been stuck in this hospital, in pain and going through treatment. Before that all she'd done was go to school. She had done nothing with her life, accomplished nothing and it was over already.
Skyes uncontrollable sobs snapped Reverie out of her stupor. "Hey," she said softly, hugging her mother. "It's going to be alright, mom. I'm not afraid. We still have a month together. Four weeks is a long time."
Reverie knew her words were feeble. Even too her she knew these last four weeks would fly by in seemingly a second.
"Besides," she continued. "I've still got my Make A Wish, remember? Which means we can have one more proper mother-daughter day again. Just like old times."
Skye looked at her daughter, tears still running down her face. "You're so brave. So very brave. I'm so proud of you, Reverie. I love you more than I can put into words."
"I love you too, mom. So much."
Skye wiped her tears away. She could cry when Reverie was gone but for now she needed to make the most of the time she had left with her daughter.
"So this Make a Wish thing, what were you thinking of doing for it?"
Reverie looked over at the poster of Yoongi stuck on her door which was directly in line with her sight of vision and felt a buzz of excitement, despite everything.
"Well, I've always wanted to meet BTS..."
(This is so sad oml)
