Remy's pov.
Remy was tired, as always. He never slept, even if Thomas got to sleep, Remy was never able to get any rest. As soon as Thomas went to sleep, he handed the reigns over to one of the creativity twins and let them do their work on the dreams. Of course, Remy still has to watch over them, unbeknownst to either Remus nor Roman. He, despite what Logan would have you know, was the most busy side of all. He never got any sleep, and all the sides needed sleep to survive, despite Logan's denial, he needed sleep as well. Remy also had to watch over the sides while they slept too, none of them knew this of course, but he had to. If he didn't care for them in their rest, the sides could fall dormant, or worse, they could make Thomas go into a coma. So Remy never got sleep.
The other sides would always make fun of him for his constant eye bags, and Roman never failed to berate Remy for his supposed "lack of effort" or "failure to help Thomas." Remy shrugged it off of course, Roman was just being Roman, a dick. Yet, when Remy first appeared, being the first side to manifest in Thomas, he noticed immediately what a overwhelming responsibility he had. He was, whether the sides knew it or not, the first side, he was the mother hen.
His first instincts were to protect, when he first met Patton, the second side, Patton didn't even know he existed, didn't for years in fact. Patton was a fatherly side, he also felt the need to protect the others, so in turn, Remy decided that Patton could take over as the parental figure and protect the rest of the new sides.
However, once he discovered how Patton had to sleep in order to survive, he knew it could not be so. He kept his existence a secret, but he now understood that he was necessary to protect the sides of Thomas, and so he did. Every night, he fought off the incentive to go catatonic, he stopped the sides from falling into a coma. He was the one who kept the whole system going.
Then, Logan came along. Remy discovered that Logan was unconsciously a motherly side. Remy also discovered how hard it was to get Logan to get the necessary sleep to survive. He put Logan in a sleep without dreams, making it so that Logan believed he never had slept in the first place.
With Logan came Deceit, a side with a even stronger motherly instinct than Logan, maybe even stronger than Remy's motherly instinct itself. Deceit was the first side with nightmares, constantly afraid for Thomas, feeling like a bad person, Patton unknowingly being the cause.
Next was Creativity, speed up a bit and then came the split. It was awful, tore the sides' family unit apart. Patton was afraid and scared, he decided that the sides would be separated for Thomas' safety, pushing Deceit and Remus to the unconsciousness, dubbing then the dark sides. Remy was distraught, not only was his family spilt up, but the so called "light side" twin was awful, his brother was shattered, Remus was broken, almost beyond repair. Roman was unknowingly the force that split the family apart and tore Thomas' mind into chaos.
Anxiety, the youngest was the last to appear. Remy immediately made sure he appeared into the dark side commons, he did not want Roman to get ahold of this fragile side, and he knew he would be accepted and cared for well by Deceit and Remus. Oh Remus, Remy had the worst guilt of all having to put the poor side to sleep, the nightmares- they were so awful, so terrifying, so gruesome Remy almost couldn't bear to let him fall asleep. He cried many nights for Remus, and Virgil was the same, or at least, when Virgil could get any sleep that is. Virgil was a lot like Remy, large bags under his eyes from a lack of sleep. Virgil was also constantly busy, if Thomas has a nightmare, Virgil had to help him. Virgil would be kept awake by fears and anxiety attacks many nights. Virgil also had insomnia, and bad insomnia at that. He's go for weeks without sleep, before Remy was finally able to get him to pass out, only to feel guilty for the resulting sleep paralysis. Remy wished, oh how he wished he could protect and comfort them all- but he had a job to do, and he couldn't stray from it.
He didn't have time to deal with his own problems, he didn't have the ability to fight off his inner demons, all he could do was press on through it all, he needed to protect his family, he needed to protect Thomas.
Even if he ran himself ragged.
Even if he went catatonic.
After all, that's what the coffee was for, wasn't it?
