Mags' pov:

The next morning I was gently shaken awake by Jay. I grumbled, noticing that it was still dark out. "Why?"

"Sorry Mags, but we gotta go now." he said. "I've already packed your things. There are some clothes at the end of the bed for you. I'll be out in the living room when you're ready to go."

"Ok." I flipped over, burying my face in the pillow. Damnit, I could've used at least three more hours. "What time is it?"

"Four in the morning. We should leave before the shops open."

God, maybe I did make a bad decision by staying with Jay. Sighing, I threw off the covers and stumbled into the bathroom to get washed up.

Maybe thirty minutes later I met Jay in the living room. He was on the phone, talking quietly with someone.

"Yeah. As soon as you can. We'll be there in four hours." he hung up and looked at me. "Hey. How are you feeling?"

I shrugged. "Fine, considering. Where are we going?"

Jay pulled a black sweater over his head. "Cambria. It's down the coast a little ways, but I have an old friend there." he picked up two gym bags full of clothes. "Ready?"

I nodded. "Guess so." As I was about to walk out the door, I remembered something. "Oh wait hold on." I quickly went back in the bedroom and grabbed a pillow.

I came back, and Jay looked confused. "Why are you bringing a pillow?"

"For the car ride." It makes me feel safe. The mint and pine smell calms me.

He laughed. "Ok. You can sleep in the car then."

Soon we were driving across the Golden Gate Bridge, with fog covering our trail. I leaned my head on the window. Maybe this is the last time I'll see this city. I didn't really care. There wasn't any reason for me to stay here anymore.

I looked at Jay. Him sitting there, one hand on the wheel... he really did look like one of those bad boys you'd see on a tv show. Not that I'm complaining. But the fact that when I met him he was just another cop made me laugh. I thought he looked different than the other guys. Guess I was right. Even if he wasn't covered in tattoos he'd look different. He just doesn't blend in very well.

"Jay?" I said.

He glanced at me. "What's up?"

"Are you scared?"

My question seemed to shock him a bit. He smiled slightly. "I'm not scared of these guys, I never have been. But I don't want to get mixed up in their shit again. And now I have a reason to get out of there." he clenched his jaw. "I'm not putting you in danger. I promised you that I'd keep you safe, and I plan to keep that promise."

"Why?" I stared at him.

"Why what?"

"I've known you for what, three days? I'm really happy to be here with you..I just don't know why you're doing all this."

Jay nodded. "I like you, Mags. And this time I'm gonna do whatever I can to protect you. I'm trying to be a better person."

This time? Does he mean what happened yesterday?
