"Careful there, Zeref!" Zeref's mother shouted from her position in front of the stove. She was frowning worriedly as Zeref ran around the house, getting ready for school.

He was a blur of frantic, chaotic movement. One second, he had a pair of boots in hand, then In the next, they were by the door, and instead, he was carrying a notebook. All while struggling to comb his white hair out of his cyan eyes.

"I think it'll be fine!" He yelled back, despite having stubbed his toes several times while turning sharp corners, fallen down the stairs, and even knocked down two house plants.

He paused, balancing on one foot to tug on his sock. "School starts in half n' hour, right?"

"Ah, I-"

He interrupted her with a kiss on the cheek and she, although still frowning, had a delighted gleam in her eye. "It's all good, mom," He sprinted to the front door with his hoverboard in hand and smiled reassuringly. His hand was halfway to the doorknob when he hesitated, and as a parting word he told her: "I love you!"

The house then shook with the force of the door slamming.

Unbeknownst to him, Zeref's mother, now alone in the open space of the kitchen, sighed with distress. "School starts in ten minutes..." she said. 'What am I to do with that boy?'

***

After leaving the house, it was lonesome sailing from there on out. That day marked Zeref's first day as a Freshman at Variah: The S-Class Elite Swordsmanship and Wizardry Academy for 'Talented Youngsters.' The training was brutal, the classes were accelerated, and everyone was a stranger to him.

It was a real privilege to be able to attend such an academy. The children of some of the solar system's most elite families attend this school. You either had to be of significant social standing or be obscenely wealthy to get in - that or on a scholarship. That in itself should have been intimidating, but for someone who has been a prodigy all his life...

A wave of confidence came over Zeref and he smirked.

Arriving at the front gate was like a sapling looking up at a full-grown tree. "That's what I'll grow into. A powerhouse, the likes of which this world has never seen before." thought Zeref.

***

As he entered the corridor of the first floor, Zeref heard two of who he thought were juniors discussing. He was sure that he wasn't supposed to be privy to their conversation, as they were speaking at the very end of the hallway when everyone was already heading to their first and only period class for the day. Nonetheless, he hid behind a corner in order not to alert them to his presence.

"That little brat," came the deep voice of a male. "I didn't expect her to fight back!"

Another person spoke, this time female and lower-pitched. "...We'll get her next time."

"So are you skipping the next period too?"

"Duh," Zeref could practically hear her eye roll. "No one wants to be in a class as trivial as specials."

Some involuntary laughter emitted from the guy. Meanwhile, Zeref got bored of listening to them. So he rose to his feet, with his boots making a loud thud.

"Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?"

"..."

Zeref revealed his presence completely, a disinterested frown pulling at the corners of his mouth.

"Who are you?" The delinquent gave Zeref a once-over. The kid was lean- muscled, donning the school's male uniform. Brown hair fell over his blue eyes, casting a menacing shadow over the top half of his face. With his hands in his pockets, the callouses on Zeref's hands are hidden from sight. Therefore, in their eyes, Zeref was nothing but a new kid ready to be taught a lesson.
