Zeref did as he did many times before in the past few weeks. Things went as he expected at first, the hands grabbed him, the voice chanted loudly. Zeref tried his best to stay calm, waiting until he eventually woke up. He sat quietly in the dark, slapping away the hands that grabbed at his clothes until he felt something red hot on the back of his neck, spreading across his back and eventually enveloping his body in what looked like a black flame. At some point in his moment of panic, he felt his body shift positions. He could move in the black box, but since he wasn't awake he knew he wasn't the one in control of his actions. The darkness parted slightly so that he could see the outside, and, as he expected, he was standing at the edge of his bed, now walking towards the door.

"Why am I walking!?" Zeref thought to himself. "Why am I on fire!?"

Zeref watched as his body walked towards his door, leaving the dorm. Zeref tried to tell to see if anyone would wake him up, but he couldn't move his mouth. As his body trudged further and further from his bed, Zeref struggled to somehow regain control. Before he knew it, his body had reached the courtyard. He snapped to attention as he heard two people calling his name. But he couldn't respond. It was futile for him to try. Whatever was controlling his body seemed to look back at the two people, who were Leah and Wenner. His body then turned back and launched into the air, getting a few meters off the ground before it hit something hard. His body turned back to see Wenner with his arms outstretched towards it, he had created a barrier to stop his body from flying into the distance. But his body just shot up again, breaking the barrier, and soared off into the cloudy night.

While his body hurdled through the sky, Zeref took some time to think. "It seems that I can move, but my body isn't following my actions. Then, there must be someone controlling me," Zeref thought.

Zeref had a hunch that this was related to the black box, which was always trying to grab him in his dreams.

Suddenly, Zeref's view of "himself" popped out of existence. He was in a dark reality.

"I knew it!" Zeref exclaimed.

He walked around, searching for any way out.

Then he had the subconscious urge to turn his head in the opposite direction. What he saw, and felt, was nothing short of horrifying.

Even though he was in a pitch-black space, he could "see" an equally dark entity, with flashing eyes and dark flames around it, reminiscent of what Zeref turned into. It emitted negative energy the likes of which Zeref had never felt before. It was even more overwhelming than his doppelganger's.

Zeref then looked up, at the creature's head.

.

"Speak of the devil," Zeref said.

His doppelganger was sitting atop the monstrosity like it was some sort of throne. But Zeref then realized. The monster was definitely emitting a frightening amount of negative energy, yes, but the bulk of it seemed to come from his doppelganger.

Zeref also acknowledged that the energy wasn't Mana. It felt similar but purer and energy-dense. He had an epiphany, realizing it was cosmic energy.

"So, Zeref. I see you've been analyzing this monster for some time now. Have you realized that I was the one who corrupted the black box?"

"Didn't the headmaster say that you and your team were neutralized?"

"If he really believed that, then old Montgomery went senile sooner than I thought," the doppelganger snarled. "What they neutralized, or should I say killed, were clones. How they didn't notice, I'm unsure, but it worked nonetheless."
