As Zeref walked through the halls, he soon spotted many students doing their daily school tasks.
"What happened to the school?" Zeref pried, "Why is it underground?"
"The school has undergone some...major renovations recently," explained the headmaster.
"Basically the entire school was buried under the ground," blurted Leah.
"I guess if you put it bluntly, yes that would be it," sighed the headmaster, "While you were gone, we hired a specialized team of workers to seal this school underneath the surface, keeping us hidden from any further threats. Aliens called the magniosapiens have invaded Earth and the other galactic sectors, and they're angry about something. The aliens you saw on the television were the magniosapiens."
"How far down are we?" asked Zeref.
"A-about 100 feet down," said Wenner, "Maybe more."
"But how would nobody notice that there is an entire school, missing?" asked Zeref, "isn't it very obvious?"
"For now, we're sticking to a hollow replica of the school being placed on top of the real one, but advancements will be made so that a more failsafe solution is found," said the headmaster.
The group then walked in silence until they happened upon a cluster of students. Leah instinctively ducked behind her father, Zeref & Wenner the following suit. "Off with you all," the headmaster ordered, his voice booming in the cavern of a hall. "What is this - a rave?"
Leah leaned over. "We've been gone for days looking for you. I think that's why the students are so anxious," she told him. Zeref was startled.
"Days?"
She nodded and righted herself as their group approached the headmaster's office. Montgomery unlocked the door and urged them inside. "Return to your studies, scholars, and don't let me see something like this again," he said before shutting the door forcefully behind them.
''So this is the headmaster's office.'' Zeref cast an eye around. The floor was hard stone beneath their feet. There were multiple lamps artfully placed around the room - atop a bookshelf, a cabinet, on the desk, and two simple chandeliers. The couches were white and unscratched, and as the headmaster offered them cups of steaming tea he praised the plush material. He leaned back and it seemed to swallow his frame.
"Nice place you have here," the grandmaster remarked.
"Thank you," Montgomery returned with a polite smile. "Now, on to more pressing matters. Zeref, I believe I've made it clear the state of emergency Variah currently is in. Taking this into consideration, the administrative board has upped the student's workload and severely accelerated the curriculum. Are you keeping up?"
There were cookies on the table but Zeref couldn't bring himself to eat one. His stomach was churning. Leah nudged him. "Uh, yeah. This comes back to the intruders from before, doesn't it?"
"Unfortunately, yes," Montgomery replied. His smile had long since dropped, in its place, stress lines, furrowed brows, and a solemn frown. "We've been facing threats due to alien invaders these past four months-"
"We even have a new protocol," Leah was quick to chime in. Her father looked at her disapprovingly. Her mouth snapped shut.
"As I was saying," he said pointedly, "In response to this threat, there have been certain implements, as Leah mentioned. The one I've failed to mention until now is the four-year curriculum being crammed into a single school year."
There was a beat of silence. The air stilled. Zeref's brain stuttered trying to process the information whilst Leah snorted at the look on his face.
