"Uncle James should be here tonight.  He said he was getting a hotel room nearby, then would come over."

"Mom should be here tonight too."

"Good."

Alex and I hung out playing video games while we waited for them to show up.  A few hours later, we heard a knock at our door. I got up to answer it, and Uncle James stood at the door.

"Uncle James…"

"Layna...you switched dorms, I see."

I opened the door and gave him a hug.  He saw Alex behind me. I let him in and he went over to Alex.

"I knew you two would find each other again."

"She's my soulmate.  I couldn't stay away."

"Well...do you still give hugs to your Uncle?"

He chuckled and hugged Alex.  It was nice to see someone else approve of us.  While we were catching up, we heard a knock on the door again.  Alex answered this time. Mom stood in the doorway. It was the first time I'd seen her since June.  It's October now.

"Alex...how are you?  Thanks for inviting me."

"Come in Mom."

She came in, then saw me and Uncle James.  Her eyes got big as saucers and took in the realization.

"No...this can't be happening again.  Didn't you learn your lesson?"

"Apparently not.  Nice to see you to mother."

"Layna Winston ...you will…"

"It's Layna Hart, actually."

"What?"

"I changed my last name.  See….you never protested it in court and I changed my last name.  Uncle James became my permanent legal guardian."

"How could you?  I didn't know about this."

"Funny...I put a formal petition in the paper like I was supposed to.  Did you not see that?"

"How could I, when I live in a different state?"

"Oh...whoops…"

"Layna...you are leaving now.  Go back to your dorm room and we'll talk later."

"I am in my dorm room.  We switched rooms. We even got it approved by administration.  These are coed dorms so we can do that if all parties agree."

"I'm gonna be sick."

Uncle James finally stepped in.

"That's enough Mary.  Leave it alone."

"Don't start James."

"It's time I did start."

He moved closer to Mom and Alex came over to me.

"You remember how it was for us."

"Don't bring that up.  What we had was…"

"What we had was wonderful.  Have you forgotten how I made you feel?"

He touched her cheek and her whole body relaxed.  Her eyes softened as she stared at him.

"Jimmy…"

Jimmy?

"I love when you call me that.  Only you were allowed to call me Jimmy.  Remember?"

"Yes."

Alex looked at me and I nodded.

"Ahem..Layna and I are gonna get some dinner.  You two need to talk. We'll be back in a few hours."
