The dawn breaks echoing the silence around the room. Not a word has been uttered between us since Jin and Lilah left over an hour ago. Y/N has been hugging her knees on the couch, muttering to herself, and I have been sitting here trying to decipher her muddled words. The pain I felt for the death of my parents has blinded me to Y/N's suffering. I can feel her emotions ricochet throughout the room, and per the norm, I am absorbing them like a sponge. My feelings and problems no longer matter as I fine-tune into hers. Placing my hands on the table as I stand to steady my wobbly legs, I cross the room sitting next to her. I need to feel her touch, but I will settle with her presence beside me until she makes her decision. The rapid sound of her breathing has slowed her head now, resting on my should sleeping soundly. The night has left us physically and mentally exhausted, and the rhythmic sound of her breathing, causing my eyes to get heavy. Pulling the blanket from the back of the couch, I cover us both cradling her closer in my arms and drifting off to sleep.
My eyes shoot open to the sound of the downstairs door slamming and my grandfather's voice echoing in the distance. The position we slept in left my arm numb underneath a sleeping Y/N that has now curled up so close that she was practically underneath my sleeping body. I maneuvered myself to get a better grip around her and move her to a more comfortable position.
Softly snoring and unaware I moved her, I kiss her foreheadand stretch my legs before standing. Realizing that I need to greet my grandparents and relive this nightmare again has me ready to retreat, but Running won't help the situation, so I descend the stairs eyes still heavy from lack of sleep. At the bottom of the staircase stands my paternal grandfather staring at me solemnly and my grandmother with her arms outstretched and tears streaming down her cheeks. "Joonie come to me, my love," enveloping me into her arms as my grandfather places a hand on both our shoulders, prying me from her grip " Dear, please let the boy breathe," he says in a calm tone as to not upset my grandmother further. Quickly noticing that there is no taxi in the driveway and no luggage to be seen, a puzzled look spreads across my face. Reading the look on my face, grandfather shakes his head, " We are not staying here; we have a hotel room nearby." "I need to speak with you before we go back to the hospital." My head is spinning, and my grandfather realizes that I am not comprehending the situation. " "Grandson, your mother is alive, and we had her moved to a better facility for care, she is not awake but will make it." Sinking to my knees, I place my hands over my face and sob.
I never imagined there would be a light at the end of the tunnel, but with this turn of fate, I can see the light. Wiping my eyes with the sleeve of my hoodie, I gather my composure and stand erect to show proper respect to my grandparents. Now having more of a purpose, I realize that I need to go see my mother immediately. A small cough is heard as all of our eyes follow to see Y/N standing on the landing teary-eyed with her hands cupping her mouth in surprise. My grandparents smile as Y/N bows at them and rushes down the stairs. My grandparents know Y/N very well and have always preferred her over Lilah, saying Lilah was sneaky to where Y/N was driven and sweet. "I did not mean to eavesdrop. I apologize.
Sincerely," bowing again and taking my hand in hers. "Joon, go with them now and go see her I'll be right here when you get back."
