We go outside and get into Ace's car. As he starts it, I look at him.
"Where are we going?" I question.
"Well, I already got to know your brother and mom a little bit. Now, I want to get to know you."
I look at the sky as he starts to drive.
"Oh. But where are we going?" I ask again.
He shrugs, lighting a cigarette and slipping it between his lips.
"I'm not sure yet. Why don't you tell me about yourself?" He suggests.
I'm not sure where to begin. Nothing about me is particularly interesting.
"What do you want to know?" I ask.
He shrugs again, looking over at me.
"Your hobbies, your favorite things, all that."
I nod, thinking. Then I just sigh and tell him the truth, even though it'll sound lame compared to him.
"I love to read. And I enjoy cleaning," I shrug.
He's quiet for a moment, then he nods. "What do you like to read?"
"Pretty much everything. I'm not too picky."
He nods again. "That's interesting."
I smile and look at him.
If he's asking me questions, I want to get to know him as well.
"What about you? What do you like to do?" I wonder.
He smirks.
"Well, I like to play pool and drink with my friends. I like to race them sometimes."
"Do you win?" I ask.
He grins. "Always."
I chuckle and look at him. He's still smiling when he glances at me.
"What's your favorite color?"
I shrug. "Brown."
He raises an eyebrow. "Brown?"
I nod.
"Yeah. It's calming, and pretty, and nobody else really likes it."
He ponders that. "Huh," he says.
I look at him. "What's yours?"
"Blue."
For the next several hours, we get to know each other. Both of us get hungry then, so we go to a little diner.
He opens the door for me, and I smile a little as I walk in.
We sit at a booth, me taking the seat across from him. A waitress comes over, grinning at Ace.
"How can I help you guys?" She asks. Her big, dark eyes don't move from Ace as she talks.
He looks at me, raising an eyebrow.
"What would you like, El?" He asks me.
I look at the small menu in front of me and select one of the first things I see.
"Do the spinach ravioli have meat in them?" I ask.
She shakes her head, barely glancing at me.
"Okay. I'll take a spinach ravioli and a sprite, please?"
She writes down my order and turns to Ace.
"What can I get you?" She wonders. She moves some of her blonde hair from her face as she beams at him.
He gives her half a smile and orders a cheeseburger, fries, and a coke. She scribbles his order down under mine.
She glances at me, then looks at Ace again.
"If you need anything else at all, let me know," she says. I don't miss the wink she throws to him. He smiles at her and she leaves.
"Tramp," I mutter.
He snorts and starts to laugh. I try to giggle with him, but it's difficult.
Why do I feel jealous?
