Chapter 3

On that same night, Gervasius dreamed of Gerhard who spoke the same words repeatedly: "How important are your loved ones and would you be willing to do for them?" and he added, "Isn't it wiser to follow your heart than your reason when in doubt?" and it like so, the same dream; night after night for many months. In that recurring dream there he was, Gerhard, and the situation the same horrible one, him asking that same question: "How important are your loved ones and would you be willing to do for them? Isn't it wiser to follow your heart than your reason when in doubt?"

One of these nights, Gervasius seemed to have a lucid dream. Just after Gerhard's questions: "Isn't it wiser to follow your heart than your reason when in doubt?" Gervasius screamed inside his own dream: "We must follow reason, reason! Stop it you lunatic! Crazy German! Shameless trickster! Get out of my head! You can't own it!", and as he charged towards Gerhard, this one raised his hand, and Gervasius began floating in the air. Gervasius saw Gerhard's mouth grow in size; it was enormous, with large yellow teeth getting closer and closer to him. The enormous mouth spoke: "The heart has reason; following means following both, you fool."

"No, no, no, no!" He woke up screaming. All this situation was driving him mad! First, he woke his wife, then his children. The younger ones crying as well. However, after this occasion, the dream with Gerhard wasn't so frequent. Something had changed for the better regarding Gervasius's nights.

At least that's how it seemed.

On the following day, Gervasius woke up earlier and headed directly to the bank. He meant to ask for a loan to pay for Mrs. Aggie's check. He could never tell that poor old woman, who had been so happy with the unexpected money, money which would solve all her imminent money problems, that he had lost Gerhard's check to her.

"This name, Gerhard! It's a curse on me!"

And so, he did. He went to the bank to speak to the manager.

"Good morning Oliver. You opened up early today."

"And you? You are here early as well? What brings you here? How can I and the Flowery Headland Bank help you?"

"I need a loan."

"For how much, Gervasius?"

"One thousand dollars. You may ask for any collateral you want. My store, my tools, anything, but I need that money and I need it NOW!"

"Relax man! Calm down! It looks like you're in some kind of trouble! But you, Gervasius?!"

"It isn't trouble per say. Someday I'll tell you. I didn't do anyone harm, but at this moment I need one thousand pounds in my hands. Please, Oliver, quickly!"

"This is a Bank, Gervasius, there are rules!"

"I know, I'm sorry, but please."

"Very well, but I want you to know that the interest rates are climbing, a lot. With the war in Europe at hand, insurance companies don't want to pay out loans. Fortunately, we have good clients and our bank is solid..."

"Oliver, Oliver! Please, I know all this. Will you loan me the money? Or not?"

"Let me, calculate some things..."

A few minutes go by.

"Gervasius, you haven't had much work since the beginning of the year... but wait I'll get them to call in with the branch at the capital and tomorrow afternoon you can drop by again and I'll do whatever I can to help you."

"Tomorrow afternoon! That's impossible! OLIVER BY GOD! HELP ME! I NEED MONEY NOW! NOT TOMORROW AFTERNOON! THAT CAN'T BE!

"Calm down, stop this! I'll give your case all priority, after all, you are a reasonable client. You know very well that calling out of Headland of Flowers takes times. It could take a week to get a line! Oh! And if old James could authorize your loan, everything would be easier..."
