4: Unexpected

I was strolling along with my new official besties; Julia, Imogen, Kate, Sofie, Bethany, Alice and Ciara - they were all level twos, like me - and I swore to myself I would stay loyal to them. We were gossiping and laughing when I realised I left my lucky horseshoe in my locker. I went everywhere with it in a pocket or something, maybe it was just fate today, I thought. I was right.

Unfortunately, I wasn't looking where I was going and I tripped over someone's foot and came crashing down towards the unwelcoming, hard floor. Too frustrated to get up by myself, I lay there and a hand slipped into mine and suddenly I was in his arms. But I didn't like Lee anymore, we - we just weren't meant to be, right? Maybe. I couldn't force myself to even glance at his twinkling, bright blue eyes. He tried to make eye contact, but he knew he shouldn't have. Without any further hesitation, he kissed me and my cheeks burned red. I just froze and kept my eyes from looking at him. Why didn't I just push him away and run? After what seemed like a whole day, he glanced at me and ran away, embarrassed. What?! Okay, so I might have lied. Twice. One, I still had the teeniest, tiniest crush on him still. Two, I might have slightly, kind of kissed back. Whoops... Where was my life going?

For the next few weeks I could do nothing more than pretend it never happened. But I had to stop throwing my life away on Tuesday when everyone was talking about Lee's new girlfriend. It must be about his... 5th? I dunno. Her name was Hadley and she was new to the school. Apparently she was really rich and she had perfect natural strawberry blonde waves that came down just below her butt. And she had striking blue eyes as clear as crystals. And she was perfectly slim but she still had a nice figure. And - it stops there.

Well obviously she was all of these things; how could Lee fall for an average girl? Well, he did with Melissa, but that's not it. I'm not saying I'm not average... Stop it, Shannon. You just want him to be yours. Well I don't know, just because he came up to me and started kissing me it didn't mean he was in love with ME. I bet he liked that Hadley girl more.

I was walking home from school by myself for a change on that unlucky Tuesday when a girl who had all the looks Lee's girlfriend was meant to have came up to me.

"Hi," she said in a sweet voice which sounded so perfect. Lee probably didn't know my name anymore, I had to face it. "You look beautiful. What's your name?"

I was astonished that she'd called ME that. "Thanks. I'm Shannon, what about you?"

She flashed a dazzling smile, that's when I knew that if I walked up to Lee he'd push me away now. And not feel sorry. "I love your name. I'm Blair."

My mouth dropped to my feet. I was so tremendously relieved and excited that she wasn't Hadley, Lee's girlfriend! I wanted to victory dance but bruh, seriously, now?

"What's wrong?" she asked, letting out a cute giggle.

"I just thought you were someone else, but you totally weren't."

She smiled again and flipped her hair. "You never know, I go by a million names. Who exactly do I remind you of?"

"Um," I paused, then decided to tell her. "She's called Hadley. She's - L... I mean, a guy I know well's girlfriend."

Blair gave me a mere, sly grin this time. "That makes sense. Im her twin sister. And I'm guessing the guy's Lee: he's so hot! I'm so jealous of Hadley. In what way did you know him?" She raised her head slightly and tilted it at a perfect angle.

"Friends," I lied, and gulped. "Actually, if I tell you a secret will you not tell anyone?" I knew I was risking it, but I had to trust Blair. I couldn't trust Hadley though, duh. Blair nodded. "Well, some time ago, I used to have this massive crush on him. All I thought of was him, and he was all I ever wished for. Then he sent me a chain mail message about him kissing me - but I sent it to the wrong email and he asked my best friend out and -" Before I knew it, my whole love life came pouring out of my mouth in words. "A few weeks ago I tripped over and we started kissing." I blushed a little. "Then he ran away and we haven't spoken since. Now, well if Hadley is as pretty as you, he probably doesn't even remember my name." My face was wet with salty tears.

Blair was a perfect, understanding listener. "Babe, I'm so sorry." She placed her hand on my shoulder. "My sister ruined it again, didn't she? She's horrible all the time. She's such a big snob and she's always being mean to me and thinking that just because she's beautiful and all the guys are all over her and she's always the teacher's favourite, even if she has a pea-sized brain, she can do what she want. But no, she can't. She can't steal your guy."

The next day, I was spying on Mia, who was sitting on the bench at the park with Ryan. It was a Saturday. "Ryan, you gelled your hair. I smell perfume. Trying to impress someone?" she giggled, shuffling closer to him. Ryan shifted away a millimetre, sheepishly.

"Well not really," Ryan obviously lied. You could tell. "I just want to look my best around my girl." He clearly couldn't do this properly.

Mia smiled happily, but it stopped when an average looking girl blew a kiss at Ryan as she passed. "So, it's five today, right here, isn't it?" she asked, as if it was a normal question. Then she saw Mia cuddling his with a jealous expression and scowled. "Who's this, your admirer?"

"No, Violet, she's my... erm, cousin," replied Ryan.

Mia stood up indignantly and screamed, "No, I'm his girlfriend!" right in Violet's face. She looked surprised.

"Ryan, I hate you!" both the girls cried, a little out of time, but together. They burst into tears and argued over which one of them was Ryan's real girlfriend.

"I was his first," Mia put forward.

Violet just gave a little snicker. "Best you can do? Ryan kissed me under some mistletoe. And we're going for a date tonight, right?" Violet raised an eyebrow at Ryan who looked sorrowful. Mia gaped at him in horror and grabbed Violet's bag, flinging it at him and walking away fast, with her arms crossed. Ryan, unsure of what to do, picked up Violet's bag and flung it at Violet, then stormed off in the other direction. I peeked my head around the tree I was behind more and Violet raised the bag to fling it at me, but I ducked. Then I just ran off.
