Briar POV
We just arrived at school and Abbey has already run off to her friends, leaving me alone with Devon. We are just walking up to our lockers in complete silence.
"Hey, you know what day it is today right?" He asks me, breaking the silence.
"Cheer and football tryouts, duh." I say, rolling my eyes. Literally everything he says pisses me off.
"Well yeah but its also our one year anniversary." He says and pulls out a bracelet. "Did you really forget?"
"No, of course I didn't forget." I says, putting on another fake smile. "Is this for me? You shouldn't have got me anything."
He gestures for me to hold out my arm so I and he puts the bracelet on me. It's such a pretty bracelet, I just wish he hadn't been the one to give it to me. I don't get how he can act like him hitting me doesn't happen.
"I know things haven't been perfect with us Briar, but I do love you, you know that don't you?" He asks wrapping his arms around me.
"Yeah, I love you too." I lie through my teeth. I try and wriggle out of his grip, just as the bell rings.
We start to walk off to the changing rooms before tryouts.
"You heard about the party tonight right?" Devon asks.
"Yeah, but I don't know if I'm gonna go." I say.
"What? You have to go. We're going." He says, sternly and loudly.
I flinch and for a second I think he's going to hit me in the middle of school. But he stops himself as he notices people looking at us. They must've noticed his loud angry tone.
"Come on, you're cheer captain, most popular girl in school. Everyone will be wondering where you are." He says.
"Okay fine, I'll go." I give in with a sigh.
"Great. I'll see you at tryouts." He says as we go our separate ways.
