"Dragons don't exist, or look like normal people." Alaric Saltzman says. I look up in surprise. This Dorian person thinks the witch is a dragon? Saltzman scoffs. "Okay, fine. She's a, a human dragon. Now what?"

Dorians on the other side of the line, explaining what to do. "In anything I've ever read,"

"In fiction."

"The way to take down a dragon, you need a buttload of courage and a sword."

Hope steps forward, "How about a knife?" She asks, holding up the same knife from before.

Hope and Raf supposedly defeat this dragon, hitting her in the head first. "You both all right?" The two nod as Alaric nods. "Let's give her a proper burial. See if you can find a shovel."

Landon and I sigh as we walk down the steps with the group. "Hope-"

"Just shut it, Landon." Hope snaps.

I frown, gripping her arm. "Hey," She looks back at me, eyes wide in surprise that someone had the balls to do that. "My brother made a mistake, alright? But from what I can tell, you've made some too."

"And where did you get that idea?" She mumbles.

I tilt my head. "You're a werewolf." I say before tossing her arm back, walking towards Rafael.

Raf frowns, looking at Landon in confusion. "Why-"

"I'll explain later." Landon shrugs.

I grip a shovel, turning back to the three of them. "Let's just go bury the dragon girl, alright?" I retort. Hope nods, hugging.

"Agreed." She brushes by me, grabbing another shovel. We all walk up the stairs, "Dr. Saltzman.." She trails off.

I hop up the stairs, eyes wide when I see a large scaly dragon. "Oh my god." I breathe as Raf and Landon come behind us.

The dragon flaps it's wings, flying over us. "Was that a...?" Landon whispers.

"That's awesome." I grin.

Hope waves us off. "You guys go." She orders, tossing her shovel.Get to the car and get out of here."

"What about you, James Bond?" I ask her.

"I have an idea." She says.

Alaric frowns. "What?" He asks Hope.

Hope tosses up the knife. "She wants this. She's going to be back." She explains.

I nod. "She has a point." I hum.

Dr. Saltzman sighs. "All right, you two, go to the car. I'll meet you there." Raf pulls me and Hope along. "Go, go."

I sit on the asphalt, watching Landon and Raf practically kick rocks. Sighing, I crawl onto my feet. "Forget it, let's get out of here." I blurt.

The boys look at me. "What?" Landon asks.

"Landon, this life, this world isn't made for us." I say. "Hope isn't for you."

Raf shakes his head. "Lena, let's think about this-"

"No, she's right." Landon says, looking up at us. "Lena and I have always been on the run. We tried to make things right here, but we messed it up." He looks back at me, sighing. "We have to go."

I purse my lips, looking back at Rafael. "You can stay here, or you can come with us." I say softly. "It's your choice."

Rafael looks at my brother, and then at me. My eyes gloss over. Raf sighs. "Let's get out of here."

Dear Hope, you strike me as the kind of person who's not so big on second chances, much less third, but my brother deserves the shot.

I can't explain why he took that knife. Believe me, I wish I could. But maybe I can explain why we ran.

Landon and I have never been welcomed anywhere in our lives. We've always been the extra. The mouths they didn't want to feed. If I caused trouble, we were out. When you grow up like that, you learn how to protect yourself.

You do what you have to do to survive.

Trust me when I tell you I know a lot about protecting people and surviving.

We never had a real family other than each other. And that's not meant to make you feel sorry for him and I. I'm trying to make you understand. He lied to protect us, but in doing so, he hurt you. And for that, we will be forever sorry.

I'm usually not the soft type, but I can tell you that I know what you're going through. Maybe not to the extent of my dad being a vampire and my mom being a wolf and having these unicorn powers, but I get it. Not having anyone to trust. You're scared to let people care because the people that care are the people that get hurt.

But I can tell you now, that Landon cares on a way he can't explain. And if we see you again, he might explode. I might explode for him.

He was happy, that night he spent with you. I hate that I ruined that for the two of you.

Your school's secret is safe with us.

With regret,

Madeline
