The figure was bent over, it looked the least bit like an alien, which was what Sydney was expecting it to be. It looked almost human. It was among a pile of mess, it's hands seemed to be stuck in a cup.
Sydney and the creature held their eye contact for a litttle too long before she spoke up.
"Wha-who are you?" She took a few steps closer and scanned the figure.
Then, the most unbelievable phenomenon happened right infront of Sydney's eyes. She began to think maybe she was dreaming.
The creature's ears and tail began to fade away in a flash of dull red light which became a red hood and it was steadying itself as it stood up.
Something dawned upon Sydney. The "thing" was a girl. That was the only thought Sydney could conjure before the girl muttered "Sorry" and Sydney blacked out. Again.
-
Two weeks had passed and Sydney had never woken up in the middle of night during those weeks. It was getting quite boring, actually, besides the soaring rate of reports about abnormal disappearances and mass migrations. Several cases of murder were also reported, but with no explanation whatsoever. This frightened the small town to no end. Everyone was a little more jumpy than normal. Everyone made sure to lock all windows and doors, be it in the morning or at night.
This did not intrigue Sydney much though, besides those rare occasions where she would link all the reports together with the girl she saw that one night. But she ultimately dismissed those two nights with 'I was probably too tired and had a weird dream'.
Until one day.
Sydney was exhausted, she was dragging her feet back home with her bag hanging over one shoulder. Finally, she could head home after a long day of school. The dim yellow streetlights were the only things illuminating the street she was journeying on. She could not help but feel oddly afraid, which was unusual as she never felt uncomfortable walking on the familiar street. Those news reports must be getting to her.
The sound of a twig cracking behind her caused her to snap her head back and walk a little faster. She kept feeling like someone was watching her. Shivers enveloped her as she began to slow jog towards her house.
She cursed under her breath as she fumbled with her keys and tried to get it into the hole. Somehow, she was not able to open the door today.
Then, she realised something. The door was already unlocked.
That was really odd. The door was always locked, especially now in response to the reports.
Panic spread through Sydney's whole body. As she walked in the house, the living room came into view. The television was on, and she could see the top of her mother's head from where she was.
"M-Mum?" She threw her bag on the floor carelessly and walked slowly towards the area. It was really, really weird that her mother did not reply her; unless she was sleeping.
Her expression fell as she saw the sight displayed infront of her. Her mother had deep bite marks on her left shoulder, and scratch marks here and there. Blood was everywhere.
"MUM. HOLY FUCK, MUM." Sydney screamed as tears welled up in her eyes. She traced her fingers over the wounds and screamed, "WHO THE FUCK DID THIS, COME OUT NOW." Her face was now stained with tears and her hands all bloody from trying to stop the bleeding. But it was hopeless, she was already dead.
"Mum..." She sobbed as she kneeled beside her, resting her forehead on her cold body. "Mum.. Please, please, don't go." She whispered softly as she sobbed against her blood stained shirt.
She inhaled deeply as the grief had all converted in pure anger. She picked up the gun they had hidden under the kitchen counter and stormed upstairs.
"MADDY!" She shouted at the top of her lungs as she kicked the door of her sister's room open and unlocked the safety of the gun at the same time.
"No.." She thought out loud as the sight of an empty room greeted her.
"MADELINE!" She tried again as she stormed out of the empty room.
"Dad are you home?" She began to walk towards her parent's room when the sound of footsteps echoed from downstairs.
Sydney froze. Maybe it was instinct, but she knew for sure, whatever that was downstairs was not her father. She held up the gun as she felt her heart pounding against her chest in both anger and anxiety. She laid her back flat against the wall as she sidestepped down the staircases on tiptoes.
She paced her breathing, trying to remain calm as she heard shuffling downstairs. She inhaled deeply and held it, swiftly turning and pointing the gun straight towards where she thought the sound was coming from.
Her expression fell as an odd sense of relief fell upon her. It was the girl from those nights. She was harmless before, Sydney figured she was still somewhat harmless.
"HEY, YOU!" Sydney frowned as she placed her finger over the trigger.
The girl turned around. Maybe it was the lighting during that night, but whatever it was, it did the girl no good. She was freaking gorgeous. Or as Sydney's brain screamed as she saw her.
She cocked her head to the left as her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "What the hell are you?" She spat. Immediately, she felt a little guilty for being rude, but she dismissed it quickly.
"Ruby." The girl straightened herself.
"You're a what?" Sydney raised her voice in frustration.
"No, foolish girl. My name is Ruby." Ruby strolled confidently towards Sydney, with a crooked smile plastered on her face.
"What happened to my family?" Sydney asked firmly as her finger trembled over the trigger, tears wetting her eyes yet again.
"Something." Ruby shrugged as she looked away from Sydney.
"Get to the point." Sydney threatened with her pistol.
"I did not do that." Ruby sat cross-legged on a arm of a couch.
"Then who? Who did it?" Sydney choked on her tears. She was using all her strength to not start bawling. She had to be strong.
Ruby's expression softened for a split second, then she reverted back to her strong stance. Sydney caught the moment through her blurry vision.
"Just get out of my house." Sydney dipped her head and clenched her jaw while she pointed the gun towards the frontdoor. She figured the girl infront of her was useless and just an obstacle.
"That simple?" The corner of Ruby's lips curved into a smirk as she raised an eyebrow.
"Get. out." Sydney shot a glare at the taller girl and gripped the gun tightly.
"Oh, Sydney, Sydney." Ruby's smirk grew as she strided confidently towards Sydney. Sydney quickly raised her gun towards Ruby. "I'm afraid not, human." Ruby placed a finger provocatively on Sydney's wrist and pressed it down.
"How-how do you know my name's Sydney?" Sydney trembled a little under Ruby's intense stare.
"Let's just say, I have done some research" Ruby leaned towards Sydney's ear and whispered softly, then chuckled softly at the way Sydney's ear flushed.
"What do you want." Sydney tried to harden her expression and seem threatening.
"You."
