She had the little bottle clenched tightly in one hand, her eyes squeezed tight. As if if she thought hard enough, wished long enough, Sydney would be back. She was not just a girl, the world needed her.
Ironically, that was what happened. In the midst of Ruby's self-blaming, a familiar voice called out to her from being a tree.
"Hey, Ruby." She whispered weakly as she dragged her feet towards Ruby. She was hunched over, the corners of her mouth were damp.
"Oh my god." Ruby's eyes snapped open and she rushed over to the girl walking towards her. "Where the hell were you?" Ruby carried Sydney's limp body without her consent.
"I was thirsty." Sydney mumbled. Ruby clearly underestimated the girl's stubbornness
"What the hell?" Ruby muttered under her breath and set Sydney's body down beside the same tree she left her. "Just drink this." She handed the bottle previously clenched in her fist to Sydney.
"What-"
"Just." Ruby cut her off and forcefully pushed the bottle in Sydney's hand towards her mouth.
Sydney raised an eyebrow at Ruby but eventually found herself pulling out the little cork on the bottle and gulping down the liquid.
She felt every move the liquid made as it went down her system, it felt warm down her throat, but when it hit her stomach, it felt fizzy and before she knew it, she was bent over a log and throwing up.
She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and turned back to Ruby. "What was that?" She asked Ruby, who seemed to be smirking with content.
"That stuff you just coughed up," Ruby waved her hand around the same log Sydney was just puking over a second ago, "Was the poison. I saved your life." Ruby continued with pride in her voice as she folded her arms.
"Right, but I don't really feel any different?" Sydney sat back down as she tried to detect any differences in how she was feeling besides the adrenaline that was rushing through her after the throwing up.
"Well that's because you have to jump three times and spin around for the full effect." Ruby mentioned with a straight face. However, that really was not the case, Ruby was just having fun taunting the girl, she had no idea how the antidote worked, for it had never been used before. All she knew was that it apprently was supposed to work.
Sydney scoffed and stared suspiciously at the girl who had her legs crossed whilst leaning against a tree. "I would never do that and you know that right?" She spat almost threateningly.
"Pft, your choice if you want to keep your life or not." Ruby turned sideways to prevent herself from breaking character if they locked eyes.
Sydney stood up, with doubt written all over her face. She barely jumped three times and looked at Ruby, "Uh?" She held both her arms out in confusion.
"You forgot to spin." Ruby chuckled, she really could not believe Sydney actually complied.
"Oh my god you fucking ass!" Sydney laughed genuinely for the first time today. Maybe, just maybe, the girl was not as bad as she thought. Pretty cool really, that she was a wolf and all.
She was already feeling better, and she knew that because she could actually stand up properly without falling after a few brief seconds.
As Ruby felt Sydney's laughter ringing against her eardrums for the first time, she felt proud, at least she had done one thing right.
"Right, now that that's done. What is actually going on? My family-" It still ached, it was a fresh wound after all, "-The emergency lines? The hole in my ceiling? That was you wasn't it?" Sydney sat down against the log.
"Uh, yes, it was. I apologize for that." Ruby stated a little too insincerely. "To cut it short, we are called Floerens and we are from a place called Floehn. The ruler of the place wants Earth. So I'm guessing you can guess what happens next?" Ruby shrugged.
"Uh, not really, no." Sydney replied in annoyance. How the hell was she supposed to guess what a group of aliens wanted from her? It was not like these things happened every now and then.
"Of course." Ruby nodded, feeling a little guilty. "Well he wants to kill all humans, so he can have everything to himself. Pretty fucking selfish, I would say. Also, he is using the disease you caught to aid in wiping out the humans, in addition to using them as human chew-toys." Ruby said a little too light-heartedly compared to what Sydney was feeling right that second. Utter confusion and panic.
"What?" was all she could muster.
Ruby pressed her lip together and nodded firmly, giving extra confirmation to what she had just said.
Sydney's shoulder dropped. "Fuck..." She began to digest all the information that was basically hurled at her seconds ago. It all seems so surreal but she felt stressed, out of her mind. "So why save me? Why drag me into this bullshit when I could be with my family, you know, in Heaven or whatever." She was hardly religious, only adding the last part as a snarky comment.
Ruby chuckled, trying to burn the memory of the Sydney who had not been told the truth in her mind, afraid she would never see this side of her again after she let the information slip out of her mouth.
"Well," She cleared her throat, slightly nervous of witnessing Sydney's reaction. "You're the saviour." Ruby forced.
Sydney's eyes widened as she arched an eyebrow at Ruby. She smirked and shook her head in disbelief. As she turned her head back to find Ruby staring at her apprehensively, her jaw dropped and the smirk was wiped clean off her face. She was dead serious about this.
