A hooded figure stalked down the halls of an underground building, walking past open doors they stood still and waited till the old man at the opposite end noticed their presence.
"This isn't what was meant to happen, Cordelia." The man spoke in between alert and relaxed, his back turned.
"I know, Nareus, but Alpheaus is a lot smarter than we gave him credit for. Or as smart as an 18 year old guy can be expected to be." Cordelia muttered the last part with a small smirk twitching at her lips.
"Your sister has been getting awfully close to that boy as well. Not to mention that with your actions last fortnight the Nektons are beginning to connect the dots." Nareus continued, finally turning to face the brunette.
"Mia is collecting information, plus he's a good looking guy. Behind the slightly psychotic behavior. " Cordie defended her older sister, all the while ignoring the ex guardian's second statement.
"They're all smart. They'll figure this out sooner rather than later, and you know why this must stay a secret don't you?" blue eyes met hazel.
"Devil Daniels?" The sixteen year old joked, quickly becoming serious. "I know, Nareus. I'll watch myself next time." She added as she walked out the way she came, pulling her dark hood up further, hiding her face.

As Ant walked down the corridor thinking about what Alpheaus had said for the hundredth time in the past fortnight he was tempted to ask his parents to take him back to the island to ask Cordie if that was true, but he knew it would be a waste of time. She'd probably deny it.
Opening the door to his room he sighed and flopped down onto his bed, staring at the only picture they had of the mermaid. doubt beginning to fill his mind.
'What if Fontaine's right? What if mermaids aren't real?' several 'what ifs' and 'perhaps' floated around in his mind, it was times like these he needed people to guide him.
On cue the sound of his bedroom door opening dragged him out of his thoughts. Looking up he saw his mother standing in the doorway.
"Hey buddy, you okay? You've been really quiet these past couple of days. Something on your mind?" She sat at the end of the bed with a worried expression. Sitting up he wondered if his mum had some kind of sixth sense.
"Do you think mermaids are real?" Ant asked.
Kaiko stuttered slightly. "Well, I mean, Yes?" The young boy deflated slightly. "There is no proven evidence that they do exist, but society has been wrong before." Kaiko added with a soft smile.
"You're right!" Ant piped up with a newly formed optimistic smile. "And I'll prove that they're real!"
"I know you will. but first you are going to sleep." Ant once again deflated upon Kaiko's words. "Or you won't have the energy for tomorrows Marine Life Census." That didn't exactly lift the boy's spirits but he relented nonetheless.
"Okay... Goodnight mum." Ant said as he buried himself under the covers.
"Goodnight Ant." Kaiko returned as she left the room. "And no playing with Jeffery." She threw over her shoulder as the doors closed, barely hearing Ant's exasperated groan in response.

Within the next couple of weeks, Ant kept finding odd clues that led back to the islands from nearly a month ago. Constant check ups on how the island was going from Mia and Alexi (Cordelia joining in occasionally) Ant began to notice things about the girls he hadn't before. More specifically the odd hint of color hidden in their skin tones, like someone had bathed them in a diluted dye. Ant wondered if it was just Alpheus putting ideas in his head that was making him see things. Nonetheless he couldn't unsee the individual tinges of purple, blue and red.
"Antaeus." The boy nearly jumped threw the roof at Nereus' coming out of nowhere.
"Wha- Nereus?!" Ant looked stunned at the smiling old man. "What are you- what are you doing here?"
"Oh I just came to see how your mermaid search is going." He smiled mischievously looking over at the only picture they had.
"Well you know those three island girls?" Ant started only to be cut off
"You don't fancy one of them do you?" Nereus asked playfully, only to see slight horror flash across the 12 year olds face.
"What! NO!!" The old man couldn't help the laugh that escaped his lips.
"Anyway! What i was saying was that they have this; weird color to their skin. Like, unnatural." Nereus hummed as the brunette pulled up a picture of the three girls with his family, pointing at them. "See Cordie has this weird purple tinge, Alexi has a blue and Mia has red" He said, individually pointing to each one.
"I see. But if you are willing to try and prove they are the mermaids you'll need more evidence than that." Nereus explained hiding his worry. Ant zoomed in on Cordelia, Showing a coral pendent shaped like a 'V'.
"What about that?"
"That's just a necklace Anteaus." Nereus informed 'sadly'. Ant slumped further into his seat and sighed.
"Well what else do I have to do to prove their mermaids?" Nereus stroked his beard and thought for a moment.
"Well you could always ask." Ant stared at him flatly.
"Yes, right. I'm going to call them up and say 'hey girls, by the way are you guys mermaids' and they would be like, 'no you idiot why would you be dumb enough to even think that'." Ant explained exasperated, making weird voices interpreting the three Latino girls.
"Well it was worth a try." Nereus said, patting his shoulder as he went to talk to his parents.
Ant stared at the zoomed in picture thinking, trying to find proof of any kind. He didn't know for sure, but something deep inside him told him that those three girls, or at least one of them, was a mermaid. And he was willing to bet that whoever was the mermaid is the same one that saved the Nektons lives.

1017 words! I had wanted this chapter to be shorter as it was more of a filler/explanation chapter. And to talk about the danger of people knowing about mermaid (as it probably wont be properly explained) practically people of this world are sick and twisted and will either kill or capture mermaids for entertainment, black market, dining etc. So I thought i best get that out the way.
