An Invitation From the Garden

Varbridge Palace, Ember's Rock, Saprea

She found herself in the courtyard. It was a large square of green grass surrounded by the palace's buildings. At this time of day, it was the perfect place to be. The sun barely filtered through the oak trees, crating dappled patterns of gold on the lush grass. As she sat under the oak tree, she plucked blades of grass between her nimble fingers. She glanced longingly at the milky rouge sky. The sun sat in the sky, dissolving in it so that it dyed the horizon a pomegranate pink and red.

"Princess Arsinomé?" the High Queen asked sharply.

Arsinomé looked up and saw Queen Irene frowning. She regained her posture against the tree and smoothed the folds of her dress very awkwardly as Irene watched disapprovingly.

Even with a frown the Queen looked beautiful. The sunlight speckled onto her skin and contoured her face perfectly, because of course, she belonged to House Evlon. She was a lumineer and could bend the sun to her will.

"Quit sulking, child. This lesson would finish sooner if you listened," Irene said. "Must I send word to your father about your moping?"

Arsinomé took a deep breath and sat up straight, her narrow shoulders thrown back as if she were steeling herself for the most unpleasant task. "My father sent me to find a bachelor, not to be lectured."

The Queen disliked the sass dripping off her tongue. "And King Azariah requested that I counsel you."

Arsinomé thought to herself, but did he say that you must nanny me? But she didn't dare to push matters further with the High Queen. Arsinomé had no care in the world for these lessons. She wanted to go outside the palace and shop with her sister or even go sight-seeing. She had heard of cities, no matter rainy, sunny, or cloudy days, that were romantic. For a brief moment she thought about telling the Queen what was on her mind but that would do her no good. It'd only prove that she was sulking. She wanted to marry, truly she did, and she wasn't even holding out for a true love match.

"What in your view are a woman's duties?" The Queen asked.

"To serve her husband," she responded dutifully. "To be dedicated. To remain discreet. And to bear children."

The Queen smiled warmly. "Imagine your husband said he thought the world to be brimming with elves and pixies. What might you say?"

Arsinomé giggled. "I would uphold him in his sentiments."

"You have been well taught." Queen Irene positively glowed as she lowered herself to Arsinomé's level. "Women are just pawns in a game played by men. They own you. But do not allow them to crush your spirit, my love."

"Am I your love?" she asked primly.

"I would dearly love you to be." The Queen beamed, the sun shining on her aged, blonde curls like an angel's halo.
