With a loud grunt, she pulled herself onto the patch of grass.
She turned over, falling onto her back. She just lay there, her chest heaving up and down as she tried to catch her breath.
Every muscle in her body ached, her hair was sticking to her forehead and hung in bundled strands, drenched in a mixture of water and sweat.
She tried to remember where she was. She closed her eyes, trying to envision the room he had taken her to. She flinched as another imaged flashed past the inside of her eyelids.
A distressed grunt tore her back to reality.
She managed to sit up, leaning on her elbows. She kept her gaze fixed on the ledge she had just crawled over. A hand reached over it, frantically feeling around for something to hold onto.
Her eyes widened.
How had he found her?
As quick, but quiet as she could, she got up, stumbling away from the ledge. She looked around for something, anything, to hide behind. Her eyes searched, frantically flicking over the land as she kept stumbling away from the ledge.
Away from him.
Her left foot dragged behind her and she held onto her right arm, every few moments, needing to wipe the blood from her forehead to prevent it from trickling into her eyes. Her eyes locked on an abandoned farm and she picked up her pace.
She glanced behind her, praying he wasn't catching up on her. He was. The determined look on his face and the way he bit through the limp she knew he had, said it all.
She looked at the farm, knowing he would see her go in there, but it would still be her best option.
She bit down on her lip to keep quiet as she managed to pick up her face. Tears streamed down her face. She was exhausted. Her mind was foggy and everything hurt.
As she reached the barn, she looked around hoping, praying, to find somewhere to hide. She heard him grunting behind her.
The barn was empty. Her heart sank in her shoes.
The door swung open. He just stood there for a few moments, looking at her.
'I'm sorry, Char. It has to be this way.' She shook her head.
'No, no it doesn't. You're wrong. You want it to be this way. I can't believe I ever trusted you, Tim.' He took a step forward and she took a step back. His face contorted in anger and he grabbed her wrist, pulling her against his chest.
She looked at him, tears streaming down her face. He smiled. He kept her close to his chest, as he penetrated her skin with his knife. A burning pain spread through her. For a moment he kept her up, but then he let go. She fell to the ground, no longer breathing.
She had fallen.
He had won.
