"If you really loved me then there should have been no other choice."

The silence following those words is deafening.

"Dammit Nathan, this isn't going to work," Elise whispers standing up from the restaurant booth.

"Elise wait-"

"You already made your choice, I know you have. So don't make this harder than it actually is," Elise states firmly as she grabs her purse from the seat next to her and walks out of the restaurant, heeled boots clicking on the floor.

Nathan swirls the hot chocolate in his mug for the millionth time. The chocolatey liquid has been topped with an elaborate pile of whipped cream, marshmallows, crushed candy cane bits and cocoa powder.

"Are you going to drink that?" Alice asks from the other side of the living room. "Cause you should probably stop swirling it."

Nathan rolls his eyes as he lifts the mug to his face, sipping the rich liquid.

The original plan was for him to spend Christmas with Elise and her Mom's family, but with the sudden breakup it's not really an option anymore.

Nathan didn't really expect it.

He and Elise were going strong, they had spent one Christmas as the two of them, one with his parents, one with Elise's Dad's family and this was what Nathan had hoped would be the last Christmas before he popped the question.

That's what he expected.

But then he also didn't expect to end up in a bed with another girl.

"Nathan come help me with the last set of sugar cookies," Hetty yells from the kitchen.

Sighing, Nathan snakes across the crowded household to the kitchen where his mom has placed a tray of christmas tree shaped cookies.

Reaching a hand across the counter he grabs one of the pale cookies and shoves the whole thing into his mouth.

"I asked you to help, not eat them," Hetty states staring sternly at her son who reaches for yet another cookie.

"Hey, I'm here to help eat them," Nathan replies without skipping a beat as he shoves his second cookie into his mouth.

"Make them look presentable," Hetty instructs. "And you can't eat more than three."

Nathan pauses for a moment, the fourth cookie halfway into his mouth.

"Sureeee."

A good 30 minutes later and half a tray of cookies later a set of decently decorated cookies are sitting on the counter, with Nathan consuming all the ugly ones.

"I mean they're not as bad as last year," Alice states as she examines Nathan's cookies.

"Hey, last year you gave me Santa Clause, he's naturally ugly." Nathan defends.

"Oh kid you are so going to be on the naughty list this year," Alice laughs.

The sharp ring of the doorbell rings through the house.

"Nathan get the door," Hetty commands as she steers around the kitchen with a set of freshly baked rolls in her mittened arms.

Grumbling Nathan walks over to the door brushing powdered sugar off his hands onto the floor.

Swinging open the door he's met by a brown package.

Bending down to pick up the package he freezes. He knows that swirly handwriting scrawled across the front of the package.
