The Fields

I heard the loud metal scraping against the floor and looked up to see Ty entering the cell with a guard not to far behind. He firmly closed the bars causing the electronic lock to set. The guard walked away.

"Jeez, it's so uptight around here" He placed a towel on his wet hair. He wore a pair of black and green swim shorts, and a now wet, white t-shirt over his body, which was starting to become see-through. I watched each drop as it trickled down his dangling hair, and crashed onto his shirt.

"You almost ready to go?" His voice called to me in my trance

"Huh? O-oh yeah! I've just been sitting around so, I should be.." I struggled to make words come out of my mouth and sat upright on the bed. "Hey uh, where exactly-is the fields? I-i mean I would think it was outside-" He stopped me from talking by pointing up.

  "Up?"

"Up." He took down his hand. "The guys around here though it would be too risky to have the fields on ground level, something about tunnels or walls-I dunno. But that's why they made the fields up there, on the very top of the K.I prison. Anyone who tries to escape from up there might as well have 'pancake' written on their gravestone.."

I looked up at the ceiling and my body went cold. "O-ok then"

He looked over at me and I could tell he saw in my face how terrified I was. He walked over to the bed and sat down next to me.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel scared or anything, its just- being in prison, its not all sugar and sunshine you know? I didn't mean to sound mean, sometimes it just happens." He looked down at his shorts.

My eyes drifted over to him sitting beside me. His hair was hanging down with his head covering most of his features, except his eyes. I stared at them and they had the same sadness I spotted before. His hands entwined with each other.

I stood up "Hey, Don't worry about it, what do you say, we tackle this thing head-on?" I refused to face  him just yet, worried that my tough guy persona might break with one look of him. I heard a chuckle and finally turned to face him. He was still looking down, but had a smile across his face.

"Yeah, okay, I would like that." He looked to face me and the sadness in his eyes was completely gone, all that was left was a sparkling emerald green.

"LIIINNEE UUPP!!!!!" I jumped as I heard a large guard scream from the hallway.

I turned to face away from Ty as I heard him quickly replace his shirt and pants with something dry. I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned behind me to see that no one was there. I turned back around thinking it was nothing, and saw Ty standing in front of the cell bars and smirking at me. He was now fully dressed in a dry white t-shirt with black lining, as well as faded gray jeans and his black and green headphones slung around his neck. His hair had almost air-dried by now. I smiled at him as he pointing at the ground next to where he was standing.

"Alright I'm comin, I'm comin" I walked over and stood next to ty while waiting for the guard to come across our cell.

When he did, his eyes strangely avoided Ty and went straight to me. He glared at me with a look you would give someone if they went and murdered your wife and children....and pets.

"Nice day were having, isn't it officer?" Ty smiled at the guard with a mocking look on his face. The large officer glanced at Ty, but then quickly looked away.

"Yeah yeah-whatever.." The man looked down at his belt and grabbed a small piece of metal to place on the scanner. With a pop the bars started slowly creaking open. The guard immediately put handcuffs on the both of us, locking me and Ty's wrists together.

We walked down the crowded hallways, prisoners chained behind one another, in organized lines. I stared at my feet as we walked. Was it always meant to go like this? Me. An inmate? Locked behind stone walls, waiting to feel the outside world again? Will this, affect my future? Is everything I dreamed for, gone?  A family? A-a lover? At that moment I jumped a bit as I felt something touch my back. I turned around to see ty, with a grin on his face, but a look of concern in his eyes. I smiled back, telling him I was fine.

      But was I? really?

"HAAUULT!!!!" A guard screamed from in front. Me not paying attention, I accidentally bumped into the person in front of me.

"Oh! I-im so sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going, a-and-" I tried to apologize as best I could without making a scene. If I was going to get on anyone's bad side, it wouldn't be today.

He looked at me from over his shoulder. The first thing I saw was glasses, big ones. He had light-brown hair and wore a red and gray checkered jacket over a white t-shirt. "No problem dude" He laughed and turned back around. Huh?

Going into the fields was like getting on a plane in the airport, with WAY to much luggage. Each inmate was scanned for any weapons or things they could cheat with. Almost all items were taken from them. From hats, to gloves, to even some particularly suspicious socks. It was almost my turn to get inspected now, I watched as they guard was at the man in front of me.

"Glasses" the guard demanded with a no-joke voice

"E-excuse me? I don't know if YOU know how these things work, but glasses plus me, equals eyesight, and I hear that's a pretty nice thing to have." The man retaliated, fighting for his glasses.

      He repeated "gla-sses"

"Ugh, fine, you want the glasses I'll give you the glasses, your lucky Janet didn't get involved.."

He gently set his glasses down in the bin, and moved on to the fields. My turn.

"Hmmm" He stopped and stared at me for a moment, I could feel the sweat moving down my face. Oh jeez oh jeez ok. There's nothing wrong, I'm just gonna move on, and get this thing over with.

"WAIT" I froze as he stopped me again.  "What's this,on your neck?"

I looked down at my amulet. "Oh this? It was a keepsake from my mother, she passed away awhile ago, so from that day on I-"

     "Off" he demanded

    "W-what?"

      "Now"

I looked down at the purple gem. Sadly, I removed it from around my neck, and placed it in the bin.

"Proceed" he removed my hand cuffs, and allowed me to walk through the large double doors that led to the roof. I stepped out.
