Whilst investigating the death of a local fishmonger, a Dumb doctor called Denki Kaminari uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, crumpled book circulating throughout Cornwall. As soon as anyone uses the book, he or she has exactly 50 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during the day to day life, but when photographed, they look skeletal. A marked person feels like an icy goldfish to touch.
Denki gets hold of the book, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: a giant bear balancing on a grubby fishmonger, an old newspaper headline about a dancing accident, a hooded gerbil ranting about feet and drinking well located in a quiet place.
When Denki notices his fingernails have goldfish-like properties, he realizes that the curse of the crumpled book is true and calls in his friend, a gardener called Hanta Sero, to help.
Hanta examines the book and willingly submits himself to the curse. He finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. He finds the giant bear balancing on a grubby fishmonger particularly chilling. He joins the queue for a supernatural death.
Denki and Hanta pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded gerbil. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
THE END.
