After a few weeks of blissfulness with the blurred whatever he had with Richie, Eddie was on cloud nine. He wanted Richie to ask him out, they hadn't officially put a label on anything that they were, so Eddie's impatience had started to show when he got more clingy and jealous towards Richie.
Richie wanted to ask Eddie out, but also didn't want to breach the fragile silence about it they had put in place after they kissed. He didn't want to ask and then have Eddie regress into himself and lose him, so he had been dealing the past few weeks with whatever little game they were playing with each other, both of them dancing around the subject.
After school one day, Richie met Eddie and grinned when he saw him, running over and slinging an arm haphazardly around his small frame. Eddie didn't even have to look to know who it was at this point.
"Hey 'Chee." Eddie said with a large smile, holding onto his backpack as they stumbled through the crowd.
"Hey Eds." Richie smiled back down at him with a mischievous look as he pinched his cheek and laughed a bit to himself, Eddie rolling his eyes and slapping his hand away despite the small smile still on his face.
"So, I do have some bad news, I can't walk home with you. My dad is supposed to be home early today." Richie's smile fell and he knew he would probably have to explain why that was problem.
"Oh, Well, I'll walk by myself." Eddie was disappointed but didn't want to make Richie feel bad, after all he had been walking him home every day since Sonia had taken his car away for punishment when he skipped cheer to hang out with Richie.
"Sorry Eds, I really want to walk you home but I can't risk it, I'll see you later okay?" he ruffled his hair affectionately and then headed off towards his house. Eddie sighed a bit and started walking by himself towards his house. He plugged his headphones in and admired his surroundings for entertainment since there was no Richie to annoy him and joke around.
Beverly saw Eddie walking by himself and broke apart from the group she was talking to with some half-assed excuse, running up beside him and panting a bit as she looked over at him. Eddie's eyes widened and he scrambled to stop his music and pull off his headphones, nearly tripping and eating asphalt as he did. Beverly just laughed a bit at his reaction, and for a moment he just paused and looked at her in awe, he forgot how much he missed that sound.
"H-hey Beverly." his voice cracked a bit and he winced and blushed as he looked away, fixing his hair nervously. This had to be a cruel joke of some sort, it would probably end with her getting upset with him again, but he could hope after all.
"Mind if I join you?" she stood close to him and had a small amicable smile on her face as she asked, confidence radiating out of her attitude but underneath she was nervous he would deny her for the way she had treated him over the years. Despite the way he had acted years ago, she had thought about how she had ostracized him and never given him any other chance to change, in 5 whole years, and realized she was just as much in the wrong for them not being friends anymore. But she wanted to rekindle it again. She missed her best friend terribly.
"Uh- no, of course not." Eddie smiled a bit and walked along with her, the silence was a bit awkward, but Beverly broke it.
"I've missed you." she said quietly, looking at him to gauge his reaction. For all she knew he could have moved on with his life already and want nothing to do with her.
