This small town at midnight was the perfect place. Not a sound to be heard, not a person around. Its been over about one year since I got my powers, and I keep getting stronger. A few days ago I stopped a drunk driver from killing some poor kid just by grabbing the back of his car. The rush from fighting crime is always amazing, I feel like a new person when I go demon. I love this power. Everyone in the town knows who I am and what I can do, but there is always the one person from a new place that tires to do something Illegal. Which is why I still fly around at night, I don't want anyone here that can possibly hurt someone in the town. The rest of the country sees me as an urban legend, I prefer it like that. I would rather not many people believe in me than the whole world.
I flew over the gas station on my nightly rounds, it was normally closed by now. Nobody seemed to be doing any thing wrong anymore. Its been months since I felt any ones evil essence. That makes me happy though, less crime in the area means everyone is safe. I want to go to through Beaumont one day and try to fight crime there. I might after I graduate this year. For now I stay here. It's almost time for me to head back to the house. I'll go around one more time.
I flew around for a few more minutes until I got to the wooded part of town. Something felt off about it. I could sense something in the thick trees and brush, but I couldn't pin-point where it was at. I flew down lower to get a better look. I could see little owls up in the trees and snakes slithering through the grass. I landed on the ground near the location of the weird sense. I was in demon form ready for anything. I could feel it getting stronger as I walked through the woods. It seemed to move slightly as I walked closer, as if it was trying to sneak away from me. I stopped where I was at and used the new ability I gained. I can now cloak myself and basically turn invisible. It was a great ability. I cloaked and walked closer to it, the sense was getting stronger. I was closing in on it. There was movement in the bushes in front of me. I could feel the presence of two people. I stalked closer to the bush.
I got up to the bush and uncloaked. I reached my hands into it and pulled the leave and branches apart. I stepped back in confusion. There were two kids there. They looked barely over the age of ten. They wore ripped clothes and were covered in dirt. Their eyes looked up at me in fear, I forgot I was in demon form. I went back into my normal form and their fear went down some.
"It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you." I told them
I needed to get them out of here, get them to a hospital so they can be helped.
"Come on out of there, I'm going to get you somewhere safe." I tried to sound as caring to the as possible.
One of the little boys shook his head. He was holding his sister in his arms. I could feel her life slipping away. I heart rate was slowing down. I could see a part of her was bleeding badly.
"Here let me take a look at that, I can help her. I need you to let her go so I can save her."
He loosened his grip on her but didn't lose eye contact with her. I reached downed and lifted her out of the bush. She was extremely light and pale. Looks like it had been days since they last ate anything. I set her down on the ground. There was a massive gash in her side, most likely from an animal attack. We have coyotes all throughout these parts of the woods. They were vicious animals that hunted in packs. They must have been out here and got attacked by one not long ago.
I placed my hands over the wound, mist began to flow out onto her. The gash was starting to close up and her heart rate began to go back to normal. The mist finished a few seconds later. The color in her skin began to come back but she was unconscious. I picked her up and held her in my arms.
"Come here and get on my back, I'm getting you guys out of here." I told the boy.
He walked over and climbed on my back.
"Hold on tight alright. I don't want you to fall off."
I opened my wings and flew up, careful not to go to fast. The hospital wasn't that far from where I was at.
"What happened to you two? What are you guys doing all the way out here?" I asked the little boy.
"W..w.we were out with our step dad. He told us to wait at the river because he had something to show us. He never came back." he told me timidly.
That makes me mad, why would someone ever abandon little kids out in the woods? I'm going to get these kids to the hospital and do an investigation of my own. Why does it remind me of James? I need to find out who did this and make them realize who they screwed with.
I got close to the hospital and landed across the street from it. I walked over to it and walked in. The nurse grabbed a phone and called to get a doctor down as soon as possible. The people at the hospital knew me and what I could do because this is where I was at after the incident at the dance last school year. Plus I bring people in all the time here.
"What happened to them Randall?" Mrs. Parker asked me.
She was the nurse that was always at work at night and the one who was always left to help me with patients I bring in.
"I was out flying and found them out in the woods. They were abandoned by their step dad. The little girl was attacked by a coyote but I was able to stop the bleeding and heal the gash in her side before it was to late." I told her.
"They look like they have been out there for days." Mrs. Parker said.
"W....w.....we h..have were out there for f...f....five days." The little boy said.
Some other nurses came down with stretchers and took the kids up to a couple a room. I sat down on a couch in the lobby area and Mrs. Parker came over with some coffee.
"They are alive because of you, you know that right?" She told me as she handed me the coffee.
"Yes ma'am, I was just lucky enough to find them. I'm going to find the step dad and make him pay for what he did to those children." I said
"You do that sweetie, you go make this town a better place." She told me.
She was an older black lady, she was really kind to everyone and always had a smile on her face. I got to know Mrs. Parker while I was at the hospital after the Ethan and Austin incident. She lost her husband to cancer a few years back and her son is off in Iran somewhere. He was a sniper in the Army. She was one of the nurses that helped Claire and I before we went back to school.
"I don't know why but I feel like I'm not doing much. I feel like I could do more to help people. I told her.
"Sweetie, you are doing everything you need to. This town is getting a lot better because of you. If it weren't for you, there would be all kinds of good people dead or bad people on the loose. You don't need to do more to help." She told me.
What she told me made me realize she was right. I'm doing everything I can and there isn't much else I can actually do. It was nice to hear her say that, I guess I was just waiting on her to. I finished the coffee she gave me and flew away. I was going to return the next morning and ask them about their step dad and where he lives.
I flew back to the house. The wind was picking up and I could feel a storm coming in. I got back to my house and went to my room. I still sleep on the cot. I hung my jacket on the wall and threw on a grey t-shirt and sweat pants. I laid down on the cot and went to sleep. Listening to the sound of thunder and lighting outside. I fell asleep a few minutes after that.
