Chapter 7

Blaze's POV

I sighed, pushing the papers on my desk away from me. I needed to take a break from thinking about them. I pulled up my email and checked to see how my grandparents were doing. They'd left to go visit a pack that they had friends in for a few weeks.

They were the only family I still had left. My parents died when I was eight. They were killed by another pack that had tried to take over. The pack failed, but my parents ended up dying in the battle. I was raised by my grandparents.

I had one uncle and he was the best uncle I could have ever asked for. He came to visit me often, chatting with my grandparents in private, "about grown up things", that I soon learned were actually just pack matters. My uncle had been the alpha of our pack before he died. After his chats with my grandparents, he'd always stick around for the rest of the day and play with me.

We used to run around the woods in our wolf forms and he'd teach me how to hunt. We'd play games in the back yard and toss a football around when we were bored. Sometimes we'd just lay out and he'd give me tips that he found useful while running the pack. They hadn't made sense to me back then, but they made sense to me now.

He'd been killed when I was only ten. My grandparents told me that it was in a battle with another pack, same as my parents had been killed, only a different pack this time. He had been going after the woman he loved and had been killed by those holding her. That's what I pieced together anyway. They really just told me that he went after a girl and died in the battle.

I knew my uncle though, and if he was willing to go to war for a girl, he must have loved her. They had to have been mates. I had long ago come to the conclusion that the pack he died fighting must have taken his mate and when he went to rescue her, they'd killed him.

My uncle's beta had taken over the pack until I was old enough to rule. It was my uncle's wish that I take over when I came of age since he didn't have any children and his beta did exactly that. Cale is the beta's son and is now my beta. He's also one of my best friends.

"Blaze, I found some rogues," Cale said, walking into my office.

I glanced up at him. This was exactly the distraction I needed right now. "Did you take them downstairs to the cells?" I asked him.

He nodded. "Yeah, they're locked up tight, I just wanted to let you know they were down there."

"Thanks, Cale," I told him with a smile. "I need a distraction right now."

Cale sat in the chair in front of my desk. "What are you working on that's got you looking for a distraction?" he asked.

I held up the papers that I'd just pushed away. He pursed his lips before smoothing out his expression. I chuckled slightly. It was no secret that Cale didn't approve of what I was doing. He tried to appear supportive because he was my friend, but I picked up on his smaller cues that indicated he didn't like it.

He didn't have to like it to support me, though. He was the one that had dug up most of the information on my desk. He did everything I asked of him in regards to this, but he never offered anything. That was another way I knew that he didn't agree with what I was doing. Cale is normally quick to offer ideas for anything regarding the pack, but on this, he sits back and lets me figure it out.

I didn't mind. I knew he didn't understand my need to avenge my uncle. He hadn't lost anyone close to him. I couldn't just let those murderers get away with killing him though. I was going to get my revenge.

"What has you so worked up about it?" Cale asked, seemingly confused.

I could understand his confusion. There wasn't anything in the paperwork that would lead to me needing a distraction. It was all straight forward, cold, hard facts. But I still needed a distraction for a while. My brain would work better if I thought about something else for a while and came back to this later.

"I'm not sure what plan of action to take," I told him. "I'm thinking that if I take a break, a plan will come to me later. You know, when I'm not thinking so hard."

Cale laughed, shaking his head. "Well, I'm sure the rogues will be a good enough distraction for now."

I nodded, dropping the papers back on my desk. "So tell me about the rogues," I commanded him.

"I found them loitering around our southern border," Cale replied. "They were talking about a pack not too far from here. I think it was Marcus Black's territory."

I nodded. "Did you figure out what they were planning?" I asked.

He shook his head. "Nope. They clammed up and won't say a word. If you feel like it, you can go down and rough them up."

I shook my head. Something he said was tickling my brain and I was trying to figure out what it was. Cale recognized my 'thinking' face and went silent. Why would rogues around Marcus Black's territory be helpful for me? I continued to ponder this, glancing down at the paperwork in front of me when it hit me.

I smiled up at Cale. "No, I don't think I'll need to rough them up," I told him, feeling much better. I had a plan to begin my revenge.

Cale looked up at me, confusion plain in his eyes. "What are you thinking, Blaze?"

I grinned. "I have a wonderful plan!" I glanced down at the smiling face on the top paper. "I can have to rogues capture her for me in exchange for their freedom. Well, I'll probably have to pay them as well, but we can afford it."

Claribelle Walker, I've got you now.

Cale shook his head. "Blaze Drabek, you sure have one twisted mind."

I grinned. "Why thank you, my good friend," I said, mock bowing. "Let's go talk to our newest friends, shall we?"

I ignored the disapproving look on Cale's face and led the way out of the room.
