Chapter 38

Damien's POV

Before Cale had called, we were at a complete loss as to what to do. We'd checked with every pack and coven within a hundred miles of us and no one had seen her. We'd even contacted Cale's pack and his alpha had played completely innocent, acting as if he had no idea where Claribelle was.

Jake grumbled angrily in my mind as I paced around Claribelle's room. Her scent was still here and it helped me think and calm down.

We were leaving around three in the morning and traveling to Cale's pack. Everyone was coming, but only Cecilia, Jackson, Eli, Jerome, Xavier, Levi and I were going to the cage. The rest would wait out of sight of the borders unless they were needed. It was going to take all of us to calm Clari down when we pulled her out of there and I was the only person that was safe to feed her.

According to Jerome, vampires recognized their mates, even when they didn't recognize anything or anyone else. He was planning to bring bagged blood with us, but when he'd said that my blood would help her more than any other, I was determined to feed her. She could complain about it later.

The only problem now, would be getting some rest before we left. I was so keyed up that I didn't feel like I could sit down, much less fall asleep. I knew it was necessary to be well rested, however, so I made my to Claribelle's bed and laid down, burying my face in her pillow.

Her scent permeated my nostrils, calming both me and Jake. I moved around until I was comfortable and concentrated on Clari's scent until I was able to drift into a dream-filled sleep featuring my mate.

It felt like only a few minutes, when in reality it had been hours, when I felt a hand shaking my shoulder and a deep voice calling my name. I rolled over and opened my eyes, looking up at Eli.

"It's almost time to go. Get dressed."

He left the room after his command, probably to wake the others, and I jumped out of bed, pulling on a pair of shorts and nothing else. I would be shifting when we got outside anyway, so there was no need for a shirt.

I could smell breakfast downstairs and made my way down to the kitchen where Alice, Cecilia, and Frieda were setting breakfast on the table. The vampires weren't bothering with the spread, instead downing goblet after goblet of viscous red liquid.

We all prepared for a battle in our own way, I guess.

I piled my plate with food, prepared to eat even though I didn't have an appetite. I would need the energy if anything happened today.

I wanted something to happen. I wanted Blaze to know we were there and come face us. I wanted to rip him to shreds for even daring to touch my mate. I never thought anyone could be evil enough to lock someone into an exhibit and starve them. Even when I hated vampires, I never would have done something like that.

"Let's go everyone," Eli commanded as Alice cleared the breakfast dishes.

We made our way outside. Before I could shift, a hand fell onto my shoulder, making me glance back at Jerome.

His face was serious, anger broiling just below the surface. "When we are close enough for you to reconnect to Belle, don't. Block her out."

I stared at him in shock. "What? Why?" I asked, unable to understand. I wanted nothing more than to let her know that we were coming for her, that she was going to be okay.

"Just trust me, Damien. Block her out."

I reluctantly nodded, not wanting to agree.

"Alright." He nodded in approval and removed his hand from my shoulder so that I could join the rest of the wolves pacing around the yard.
