Chris POV
I simply watched, stunned at the scene before me. Evan wants Emma to kill someone when she can't even handle her own emotional turmoil. How does he expect her to kill someone. She's not like the rest of us. She is no criminal, just a damaged girl who needs healing.
Emma sat on the couch shaking as Evan left the room. I can already tell that her mind started dipping into dark thoughts and fear. I stoically watched her for a long seconds before Mason snapped his fingers at me.
"Yo! World to Chris!" Mason sounded mildly annoyed. "You okay, bro?"
"Sure." I sighed as I rubbed my temples. "What's up?"
Mason looked at me with a frown, he should know better than to ask if I'm 'okay'. Just take a deep breath and collect yourself.
"I think you should leave, I know that look." Mason stood up and walked to the door, holding it open for me.
Surprised, I gave Mason a questioning look.
"You heard the boss. Emma and I need to prepare for the job." Mason said. "We both know you ain't cut out for this shit."
I moved my gaze from the door back towards Emma. She hugged herself as she slightly rocked back and forth. Although I couldn't hear what she was saying, she was clearly chanting something over and over again.
"Look at her." I nodded my chin towards Emma. Mason followed my gaze, not looking overly concerned. "She had shut down."
"She ain't a fuckin computer Chris, and if she was, then we're clicking on restart." He rolled his eyes.
"Your jokes aren't funny."
"I know..."
We both turned and watched Emma for a bit. She started unconsciously scratching at her forearms.
We stepped closer, to hear what she was chanting.
"I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it.I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it."
"Well, fuck." Mason scratched the back of his neck. I nodded in agreement.
"I get it Chris. Princess is fucked in the head, but we all are. I can work with her. So, out."
I pinched the bridge of my nose and let out a breath. "Don't hurt her."
Mason looked slightly offended, but only shook his head, "Never."
Mason POV
Evan wants to kill an ex- gang member. That's all the reason he needed to give for me to get on with the job. Yet for some reason Evan felt the need to include that the ex-member stole money on his way out. So long as I get my money, I don't ask questions, but not Emma. She isn't getting paid, and she is full of questions. I left her to calm down in peace before approaching her. She ain't doin better by much, but it was a good enough start.
"He's not innocent." I tell her.
"How do you know he deserves to die though?"
"Evan ordered it."
Emma gave me a disgusted look, but I only flashed her a smile. It made her angrier.
"If Evan told you to jump off-"
"That's enough." I said in a stern voice, making her flinch. "Just follow the orders, Emma, otherwise Evan will keep hurting you."
"Are you threatening me, asshole?" Just fuckin great.
"No!" I exclaimed, "I'm sayin' you gotta step the fuck up, and do what you need in order to survive."
Emma looked silently at me for a few long moments.
"Wouldn't that mean that killing you guys is in my survival's best interest?" Emma asked coldly.
I gave her a hard look and scooted my chair towards her. Ignoring her words, I began reading to her about our target. She was quite as I explained that killing him via poison was our best bet.
"You obviously can't over power him. Nor use weapons. We wouldn't need you if we could kill him from a distance. So our best bet, is you going to one of his parties and poisoning him."
"How the fuck do you expect me to poison him when he's gonna be surrounded by people? Want me to roofie his drink? People will see me roofie him. They might be able to save him when he starts foaming at the mouth."
"You're worrying too much," I poke her nose, and she slapped my hand away.
"He's gonna be offered drugs-- cocaine-- y'know, typical party drugs. Only, the poor lad will be overdosing."
"I never tried nor offored drugs to anyone. I wouldn't know how to even begin convincing your old friend to take drugs from me. A stranger, who by the way wouldn't even be on the invite list." I can see she is trying to keep from having a mental breakdown. I need to make sure she learns to handle her emotions. She can't succeed at this mission if she's constantly agitated, scared or both.
"I keep telling you Emma, you must relax. It is in the best interest for all of us, that you succeed and make it out alive." I give her a reassuring smile.
Emma's eyes watered, her fear consuming her again.
" I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die."
"Fuck..." I scratched the back of my neck, unsure of what to do. "I'll be back, Imma get Chris."
