I open my eyes to see my bedroom, I look over at my alarm clock.
8:36 I stand up and walk to my dresser, when the evening before comes flooding back to me, the sunset, the pain, the girl, the wings. THE WINGS! I rush to the bathroom. Looking in the mirror, the wings are gone. I go back to the bedroom, today I'll be looking through Sector one and recieving my first house which will be decided by my profession and then I'll be able to get one higher quality once I've made enough money to buy one. I throw on a black t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans. and make my way downstairs. this is the last day I'll be staying here. tomorrow I'll be in Sector 1, where I'll be spending the rest of my life. I wander to the fridge and find an apple. I walk to the front door, taking a bite of it. Taped to the door, I find a note, on it says;
Kalen, your father and I are out running errands. We wish you the best of luck in Sector 1 and we hope to see you soon. With love, Mom (Alise Berico)
I step through the door, Where do I have to go now? I guess I'll have to get to the train station, so I can get to Sector 1 and meet the realtors who'll be helping me to find somewhere that will fit my profession.
I've just made it in time! The train will be arriving in only twenty minutes. I walk over to purchase my ticket. Hopefully I'll have enough money on me to buy one... damn, I forgot my wallet, I turn out my pockets and find two twenty dollar bills. I find myself at the ticket booth in moments, There's a long line of people my age from Sector 4 waiting to get tickets to their new sectors. I search the line for the girl I held in my arms last night, she's nowhere to be seen. I find myself disappointed, I suppose she'll be remaining here, in Sector 4... or she's running late, like I was. Last night was rather exhausting. I find my thoughts going back to her, That teasing could keep me with her forever if I thought I'd be able to se it one more time. She wasn't what most guys thought of as pretty but that personality, no one can compare. Has she had a boyfriend? Yeah, that's right, she did, what was his name... Orin Gaener, He's tall, his hair is brown, I believe it's considered hazelnut, his eyes are hazel and his entire face was invaded with freckles. He broke up with her about two years ago... her heart had been shattered, you can tell that about her even now, just the way she looks at him.
About five minutes later, Laurisa has joined me in line. There's an awkward silence between us, I try to break it but all of my conversation starters seem well... awkward.
"Last night was pretty... uh, you know... hehe," she broke the silence first.
"Yeah, I'm glad you're... better," I say, motioning to her back.
"Oh, yeah, you too," after that, the silence continues. I try several times to start up another conversation, but all I can think of has something to do with last night. I can't seem to bring myself to look at her, it just seems to bring back last night.
Finally, I'm purchasing my ticket.
"That'll be eighteen dollars and seventy-five cents please," wow, cheaper than I'd expected. I reach into my pockets, and produce a twenty dollar bill, she hands back a dollar twenty-five. I take my ticket and wait next to the booth, I'm wondering where Laurisa's going.
"One ticket to sector one please," Sector 1? There's something odd about this whole thing, It's almost as if we're... Linked somehow. No, thats not possible, It's all just a coincidence.
"Eighteen seventy-five please," there's a pause then, rather than the dingOf the cash register there's only silence. I hear Laurisa swear under her breath.
"I-I don't have any money on hand," She's suddenly worried. I step out from the shadows of the booth, producing another twenty dollar bill. I smile at her. The girl is given her ticket and we walk away together.
I've never been on a train before, most people would think I have, considering that my parents are royals, but no, they were always going to different sectors due to buissiness, and until now, I was under age and couldn't ride alone. The seats were all deep red, a gold trim making their way around the edges of them. I find myself in a mostly empty car, Laurisa next to me.
"So, where would you like to sit m'lady?" I ask pleasantly, but wow I sounded stupid.
"Oh... you wanna sit with me? why, I mean my par- oh right... I'm not measured by my parents anymore."
"Well, neither am I, so I'm not just the son of the king, I'm just the same as you, a guardianso, would you like to sit with me?"
"Umm... you know what? Yeah, I really do," her smile suddenly lights the world. I can't help but sigh, she's just so... amazing.
"Is... something wrong?" Her words startle me from my stupor.
"Oh... uh... yeah, I'm fine," I find that my neck is sweating, I move my hand to wipe it away. God this is suddenly awkward... "so, uh... wanna sit here?" I gesture to an empty seat.
"Yeah, that's cool," I can tell she thinks it's awkward too. I decide to just go with it, there's little else to do. She sits and I take a seat next to her, but every time I look at her, I see the girl in the mirror, the intensity of her eyes, the way the wings seemed to make her appearence suddenly daunting.
"Kalen..." her voice startles me, the way she said my name, higher than usual, was she... afraid? That doesn't seem like the Laurisa I know.
"yeah?"
"I'm scared, what if I don't fit in with the others?" I think she means the other gaurdians. I try to think of a way to comfort her.
"But, soon it'll only be us" I see her half smile.
"I mean... just, the otherothers." I wrap one arm around her.
"I'll be there next to you the whole time."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
