Robin had agreed with Lindsey that she would have Stevie back at the house by 6:30 and that had given him enough time to get everything ready. He stood in the doorway of the bedroom looking at his work and smiled. It was perfect. The clock read 6:20; he was dressed in a shirt that Stevie had bought him and she loved it because it “brought out the blue in his eyes”. After spraying on her favorite cologne, Lindsey made his way downstairs and waited for Stevie to arrive.
The car pulled into the driveway and Stevie got out, grabbing the bags from the trunk of Robin’s car.
“Oh my god, I didn’t realize how much stuff I bought!” Stevie gasped as she struggled with the bags.
“Well, our makeup shopping turned into you buying Lindsey an entirely new wardrobe and looking at baby clothes...”
“I know, but he’s my guy and god knows I don’t want him wearing that suit again. As for the baby clothes? Call it a pregnancy hazard!”
They both laughed and Stevie hugged her friend. “I’ll see you at the airport tomorrow. Let the madness begin.”
Robin squeezed Stevie’s hands. “I’m so glad to see you so happy, Stevie. Lindsey, too. You guys deserve it. I’ve known you both what feels like my whole life, so I’m sure about that.”
“Oh god, you’re gonna make me cry if you keep this up. You can't do this to a pregnant woman!” Stevie replied. “Thank you.”
“You two have a good night” Robin winked which got her a puzzled look from Stevie, who had totally forgotten that Lindsey had mentioned plans.
Stevie opened the door to her house and dropped the bags on the floor, turning her back to the stairs and began sorting through them.
“Linds? Baby, come help me. I bought you a bunch of things and –“
She stopped as she felt his hands on her hips. He turned her around and pulled her against him, wrapping his arms around her tightly.
“Hi.” She crooned, nuzzling his neck and inhaling the scent of him. “You smell good.” He lifted her face to his and kissed her lips softly.
“I missed you today” Lindsey said and kissed her nose.
“I missed you too.” She smiled and ran her hands over the front of his shirt. “You look nice, baby. Where are we off to?”
“I’m gonna show you. Leave the bags there. We’ll sort them out later.” Lindsey reached for her hand and she took his hesitantly. He led her up the stairs and as they reached the door to the bedroom, he stood behind her, covering her eyes with his hand.
“I would just tell you to close your eyes but I can’t trust you not to peek. I know you too well.” He chuckled.
“Linds…what are you up to?” He ignored her question and pushed open the door to the bedroom, while keeping one hand over Stevie’s eyes. He waited a few seconds before pressing a soft kiss to the back of her head and removed his hand.
Stevie gasped as she took in the sight before her.
“Oh my god, Lindsey…”
The bedroom was lit by nothing but candles and there was a smell of incense in the air. The bed had been moved to the far side of the huge bedroom and in the middle of the floor sat her mattress, covered with a crochet blanket she had made for their bed in San Francisco. The floor and makeshift bed were scattered with pink rose petals. Stevie heard the crackle of the turntable and the sound of Cat Stevens filled the air. Stevie turned to Lindsey, tears filled her eyes.
“Well, what do you think?”
“Linds…it’s absolutely perfect.” She moved quickly towards him, throwing her arms around his neck and kissing his lips repeatedly. “You are the sweetest, most beautiful man, baby.” Her voice was choked with emotion. “It’s only because you make me that, way Steph." Lindsey was holding her hands and looking into her beautiful brown eyes.
