Chapter 2 ~ A big risk

Darcy really did take this whole blind date thing very seriously. Every person she set eyes on at work – even if they were a customer – she thought; “Could Becca be right for him?”. It was occupying her thoughts entirely.

And the reason for this was that, as much as Becca thought that Darcy was only her friend to exploit her sympathy in times of distress – and Darcy did suspect as much – Darcy really did value Becca as a friend, and the only reason she sometimes couldn’t visit Becca was merely because she really was just busy

But anyway, one particular night, when the deadline for organising the date was drawing ever nearer (Darcy agreed that they should choose the date two weeks in advance of the actual evening – the date for which would be the 22nd of August) – she ran the faces of each of the possible candidates through her mind.

There was Josh: about a billion feet tall, a bit of a stick insect, liked going on to Facebook while he was supposed to be doing work.

There was Preston: cute, helpful, a good listener – perfect for Becca – only he was about eight years younger than her, and that might prove to be an issue, especially when Becca would criticise Darcy for even going out with someone four years younger.

There was Stefano: Gorgeous (yes, capital G), dark, olive-skinned with deep, mysterious brown-black eyes. Alas, he couldn’t speak a single word of English.

Also, there was Billy: Average height, average-looking, average personality: a bit too average for such an amazing friend as Becca, Darcy thought.

There was Marcus: Not your traditionally good-looking guy, but with a bit of a twinkle in his eye. He was also a good listener, and very sweet in general.  He had a great sense of humour; always made even the toughest of her colleagues laugh... but was gay.

It was a shame; Marcus could have been perfect for Becca, if only he wasn’t gay.

Darcy thought it was quite tragic how some of the best men in the universe were gay – George Michael, for example. Now that one really was tragic.

That got Darcy thinking, again.

He was gay.

Marcus was gay.

And hadn’t Becca said that she had never looked at a man in “that” kind of way before?

Darcy could almost hear a *ding* as the imaginary light bulb lit up above her head.

If Becca wasn’t straight, she wouldn’t be the sort of person to admit it to herself. She was quite old-fashioned in her ways, was Becca, and often was a little bit homophobic.

Before she could stop herself, Darcy started running through all of the girls she worked with. The images of their faces spun round in her head, popping up one by one, and one by one Darcy discarded the possibility.

Until, one face stopped still in her head.

Katrina Casey. A woman so gorgeous and lovely that even Darcy considered herself to be a possible lesbian when she first saw her.

Darcy exhaled. Setting Becca up with Katrina would be a long shot, especially if her assumption was completely wrong. It was a big risk; a risk that she might lose one of her most valued friends forever; so she thought it over in her head carefully and to the last detail, until she made her final decision.

She was going to set Becca up with a woman.
