"Tights? Check. Red plaid flannel shirt? Check. Black beanie? Check. And last but not least, black Converse? Check." I said to myself as I got dressed in the morning. I was going to the mall with Randy and Ekko today, so looking good was important.

Oh yeah, I'm Izzy. No, it is not short for 'Isabella', just Izzy. I have long light brown hair, I'm about 5'6, not fat-but not skinny either, cheek dimples, and glasses. I'm a tomboy and a geek-but I love pink too. I can make people laugh on a regular basis, and I'm pretty good at sound effects.

The jokes I tell are not just jokes though, they're puns, in other words way more complicated. Instead of making a funny face or saying something stupid to make people laugh, you actually have to think for puns. Example, you're at the dinner table, you ask for someone to pass the butter, and that person says,"You BUTTER not say that again!!" ..they just made a really bad pun.

Anyway, I skipped down the stairs excitedly but at the same time had to hold down my beanie.

I got downstairs to see that my mother wasn't making breakfast, but arranging the jam and jelly magnets on our fridge, whilst playing music.

"Hey Mom," I greeted her.

"Hey honey, how was your sleep?"

"Good I guess," I replied with a boring tone.

She was arranging the magnets in order from my dad's (we had them personalized) to the youngest kid, which was me.

"Remember, I'm going to the mall with Randy and Ekko today Mom."

"Oh yeah, I hope it goes well!!"

"Thanks Mumma," I said with a smile, "and oh yeah, Mom?" I said as it switched to my favourite song.

"Yes honey?" As she picked up my magnet.

"That's my jam!!" I said, stepping outside and closing the door.

When I got to the bus stop, the big yellow mode of transportation was just pulling up.

As I got in, the bus driver, Buzz, greeted me with his regular toothy smile.

"Hey Izzy, how's my favourite passenger today?"

I'd known Buzz for a while since I regularly ride the bus, so we were pretty close.

"Hey Buzz, I'm good I guess," I exclaimed, "but please don't say that again, it freaks me out a little," I said with a chuckle as I transferred the change from my pocket into the machine.

"Alrighty then, so where are you headed today?" he asked as the bus started to move.

"I'm going to the mall with Randy and Ekko today." Randy and Ekko sometimes took the bus with me so Buzz knew them.

"Oh nice!" he exclaimed.

Just then the bus rolled to a stop to pick up a couple of tired and boring looking passengers. One by one they got on and stuck their change in the machine or showed Buzz their student card. They were all people I didn't recognize at first, but then someone got on who made me have to double-take.

Oh my gosh. It was Carter Mitchell, the boy who made my heart melt. He had smooth black hair and the kind of bangs where when he puts a beanie on, they stick out of his hat and he has to run his fingers through them in order to "look good". His face was absolutely perfect with freckles running under his eyes and on the bridge of his nose. His eyes were the purest blue you had ever seen. He was wearing his regular DC shoes sweater with casual jeans and blue high tops. He had seen me before since we had History and Biology together, we never talked though-so he didn't really know me, I was just a person he maybe saw everyday.

"How's it goin' Buzz?" Carter said as he and Buzz did that guy handshake that only guys do.

"Hey Carter, I'm great, how are you?" Buzz exclaimed with a thoughtful tone.

"I'm good!" and then,"Hey Izzy, what's up?"

How did he know my name???
I tried to say something normal, but all that came out was,"Grrb tab poopla!" I am such an idiot!!

Right after I said that Buzz burst out laughing and so did an old lady sitting down across from where I was standing.

"Oh,my bad, I mean, 'Greetings, from the planet Zartog'," he exclaimed laughing and walking to his seat.

I just chuckled trying not to show my embarrassment and longing to hide under a rock.

The bus lurched to a stop at the mall and I stepped out saying bye to Buzz still embarrassed from my recent bone-head maneuver.

I walked inside the mall doors to see Randy and Ekko waiting on a bench talking.

Randy was about 5'3 and had short blonde hair with pretty light blue eyes. She was very thin but that didn't stop the boys from liking her.

Ekko on the other hand was about 4'11 nearing 5 feet. She had medium length brown hair and nice brown eyes. She was also thin but always knew how to make herself look good.

"What up, children of the corn," I said rather loudly so they could hear me.
They both looked up and saw me coming.

"Oh hey, we've been waiting for a couple minutes so you're not really late," Randy said casually.

"Oh ok good, but I have to tell you two what just happened on the bus!!" I said planning to tell them of my mortifying experience.

"Oh my gosh, what happened??" Ekko said with excitement.

"I'll tell you in a second but first..." I said leaving them in suspense.

"...What?" They said together.

"You better not tell any CORNY jokes on me..get it? Get it? 'Cause I just called you two children of the c-"

Then Randy cut me off and said,"Yes, yes we get it," while rolling her eyes in annoyance,"now come on."

"NO WAY!! You said that??"

"What does that even mean??"

"How am I supposed to know? All I could think of was how good he looked," I said after having to listen to continuous laughter from the two of them.

I took a sip of my smoothy in annoyance listening to them rant about what happened on the bus.

By this time we had been to 5 stores and gotten a couple things each. We were about to walk into another store when I heard my name being called by Ekko.
"Hey check this out," she said urging me to go where she was. "It's an ad for a joke competition coming up."

"So?" I asked wondering where she was going with this.

"Oh ya, it's a PUN competition, you should enter Izzy!" Randy chimed in.

"Meh, I don't think so," I said.

"Why not? You'd be really good at it, and look, the winner gets $250 and a vacation to Mauii!" Randy said.

"Why would they give me a vacation for being witty and making jokes?" I asked quizzically.

"Maybe they like punny people...HA!" Said Ekko clearly proud of herself for her attempt at making a pun.

"Well, I'll consider it," I said somewhat giving in. After all, how hard could it be? I make puns every day-so I guess I could give it a shot.
