Today was Sunday, which meant I was getting volunteer hours for school. The place where I volunteered was a flower shop somewhat close to my house. There I had to make flower arrangements for people having a funeral. Personally, I hate flowers, and I'm not really good at decorating, but I needed the hours, and the employees weren't half bad.

They were all Italian, and liked to play opera music, which I was fine with since I am of Italian decent. They all had heavy accents and it was a little funny because they couldn't pronounce my name right. In Italian, the letter "z" is pronounced like "ts", so instead of saying "Izzy", they would say it like "Eetsy". After being called this a number of times I had acquired the nickname "The Spider" because of the song "The Itsy Bitsy Spider".

In the afternoon the store got a little more busy and one by one my beautiful masterpieces kept leaving me. A lot of people kept coming in claiming that their relative or friend had "died on the inside". My Italian friends and I dealt with this just as if we were dealing with any other customer... which didn't end so well.

The customer would be asked what flower they thought would describe their "dead" acquaintance. The customer would often be confused as to which flower they should pick which would result in them having to pull out their cell phone and call the person. While this was happening, we would automatically ask them to put their phone down because it is impossible to bring the dead back to life. The majority of them would get annoyed and leave, and the others would get confused, put down their phone, try to explain, and THEN leave. So either way, we would have no trouble with them.

A few minutes before closing we were all cleaning up when a woman came running in who looked like she was going to burst into tears. She told us her story and it turns out that no, she didn't need any flowers, but that she had just witnessed a car accident and we were the closest store to where it happened. I didn't understand why she was crying, like yeah, car accidents were traumatic, but it's not like she was related to anybody who was in it.

It was the perfect time to think that because then she said,"My nephew was in the accident and I left my phone at home, may I use yours?"

So of course we let her use it, and when she was done we came outside with her to see where the accident had happened and if we could help at all.

When we got to where the accident was I was in complete shock. The nephew turned out to be Carter.

Carter! Out of all people why Carter? Watching him lay unconscious in the car was probably the worst thing I had ever seen.

Ok, maybe seeing my great aunt naked in the shower was probably the worst thing I had ever seen, but you get the point.

About ten minutes later the police and an ambulance arrived and were already loading him into the white and red vehicle.

"Thank you so much for the use of your telephone," Carter's aunt exclaimed with relief,"if it wasn't for you I don't think he would have lived."

"Eet's a no problema, someone need help, we helpa them!" said Luigi with his heavy accent.

"Ah yeeessa, Luigi isa right!" said Mario, Luigi's older brother.

"Well thank-you so much!" she said sympathetically.

After talking to Luigi and Mario, Carter's aunt walked back to the ambulance where the paramedics were helping Carter get back to consciousness.

"Ok Eetsy, let's a-go back to the shop-a," said Mario.

"Ok one second you guys, I'll be there in a minute," I said planning to talk to Carter's aunt at the ambulance.

I walked over to the hospitality vehicle and caught her eye. Obviously she was dealing with a lot right now, so I was going to keep it short.

As I approached her she said to me,"Hey weren't you working at that flower shop that I ran into?"

"Uh, yes, I was getting my volunteer hours, but I just came over to see how Carter was doing," I exclaimed explaining my reason for being there.

"Oh, well I think he's slowly coming to consciousness," then she paused and said,"wait, you know him?"

"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't think to introduce myself, hi I'm Izzy," I said as I reached out my hand for her to shake,"and yes Carter and I have History and Biology class together."

"Hi Izzy, I'm Carter's aunt, Linda," she said introducing herself,"and oh I see, well I'm pretty sure he's going to be alright," she exclaimed with a smile.

"Well I should get back to the flower shop, it was nice meeting you!" I told her starting to walk back to the store.

"It was nice meeting you too Izzy," she said nicely,"and by the way I can help you with work if you want, here's my card," she said handing me a neatly printed business card.

"Ok thank-you!" I exclaimed gratefully.

When I looked down at the card I couldn't believe it. She not only found jobs for people, but she was the CEO of the organization that put together that pun competition. What was it called again? Oh ya, it was called "Do It For The Pun!".

Wow, I think this is a sign.
