The rest of the day went by in a blur. They ate sandwiches for lunch in an almost uncomfortable silence, then pretty much kept to themselves for the rest of the day. When the sun had set and Jade retired into the guest bedroom to sleep, Lea snuck away into her own room to do some thinking.
She hadn't said real words to Dylan since they all read the notebook together and Lea found out about his proposal. In fact, she'd been down right cold to her boyfriend all day long. He'd reach out to touch her, and she'd shrug him off. When he tried to talk to her, she'd walk away, pretending she didn't hear him. She knew it was wrong, but she couldn't help herself.
Dylan was engaged to someone else. Someone he still loved very much. How could he ever feel the same way about her?
The door to Lea's room creaked open and Lea pulled from her thoughts to face the door. She stared into her boyfriend's eyes silently.
"Are you ready for bed?" Dylan asked her, an obvious edge to his voice.
Lea nodded at him, hesitated, then said, "Maybe you should sleep in the guest bedroom with Jade..."
Dylan's eyebrows furrowed with confusion. "But I always sleep in here."
"I...just want to sleep alone tonight. Okay?"
"I'm not taking that for an answer," Dylan told her, and took a step into the room. Lea could tell he was getting annoyed, but she also didn't really care. Lea rolled her eyes in Dylan's direction and put her head against her pillow. She hoped if she broke eye contact, he'd get the picture and leave her alone.
She hoped wrong.
Dylan let out a frusterated sigh and crossed the room to sit on the other side of the bed. Just like that, their eyes locked again. "Why are you acting like this?"
"I'm not acting like anything, Dylan," Lea shot back quickly. "I just don't understand why you can't leave me the hell alone for one night!"
"It's not just that!" Dylan argued, his voicing raising a fraction more. "It's not just tonight! Ever since we read that notebook, you've been treating me like crap. You won't let me kiss you, you want let me touch you and you've hardly said a word to me!"
"That's not true--"
"Yes, it is true!" Dylan's bright green eyes were wide with anger, as he shoved some jet black hair out of his face. "I just don't understand why my girlfriend is acting like such a...a--!"
"A what!?" Lea shouted in his face.
"A bitch!" Dylan shouted back before he could keep the word from spilling out.
The word drew tears from Lea's eyes. Dylan had never spoken to her that way. It hurt more than she could ever imagine it would. She turned away from him, refusing to look him in the eyes. "Sleep in the guest bedroom, Dylan. I don't want you in here."
"Gladly," Dylan huffed and stormed over toward the door. He took one last look at her before rolling his eyes and slamming the door behind him, leaving Lea to her tears.
