*** (Ken rescues)
Ken rushed into the elevator and pushed the button for the sixth floor. He would be there soon, he thought, wishing his thoughts could reach Samantha.
He had managed to distract Mark a little, but ultimately Mark had seen through his plan and turned off Samantha's earpi. If Ken had had more foresight he would have disabled the house security while he had the chance, but there was nothing he could do now. Thats why he'd killed the power to Mark's apartment. He knew it wouldn't do much but slow down the inevitable.
The elevator signal moved to the number six, and Ken readied his handgun as the door opened.
He rushed out into the hallway. There were four apartments on this floor, and Mark's was the last. In addition, each apartment was relatively big. Ken ran down to the end and then stood before the door.
A single push and the door opened. That was lucky. He gave a voice command to his earpi and immediately the power in the apartment came back on. He rushed inside, his gun held out in front of him.
Ken looked around him but the living room was empty. There was one door to the right which must have been the bedroom.
"Stop! Let me go!"
Samantha's cries came from within the room. Ken rushed over and kicked the door open, aiming his gun straight ahead.
What lay before him shocked him. Samantha lay pinned to the bed, her blouse torn open and her skirt pulled up. Mark sat straddled atop her and was busy undoing his belt.
Ken couldn't determine if he had been too late or just in time. Regardless, when Mark saw him he stoped what he was doing and gave Ken a smile.
"Did you come to watch?" He asked.
Ken raised an eyebrow at the man's crazed remark, but didn't take the gun off him.
"Come now." Mark said, getting off Samantha and standing up. "Do you know how to use one of those things?"
"Just pull the trigger, right?" Ken said.
Mark laughed.
"Not quite. First you have to check it has bullets inside. Second you have to turn off the safety. Third you have to actually aim with some manner of skill. That time that you escaped, did you realise that the whole time you had the safety on? Its quite laughable, really. The soldiers who met you noticed it straight away, but based on our orders they let you escape anyway."
Ken held his breath. Such a thing was truly possible. At that time he had truly known nothing about guns. However he was no longer as naive as at that time.
Samantha suddenly crawled onto all fours and clambered off the bed.
"You stay right there, bitch!" Mark said suddenly, pointing at her threateningly.
Ken didn't wait. He aimed briefly and pulled the trigger. As if in slow motion, Ken watched as the top part of his gun catapulted backwards, a single bullet burst out from within the chamber, and then after crossing the small distance within the room, the right shoulder of his opponent burst open in a mess of blood and broken bones.
"Aahh!" Mark yelled, clutching his shoulder with his other hand impulsively.
Samantha rushed quickly to Ken's side and gripped his shirt fearfully.
"You hit me.."
"Let's go." Ken said, speaking softly to Samantha.
"Mm." Samantha murmured.
